A club by name only San Jose Sute Basketball Coach Bill Berry tried just about everything in hi* power to get hi* young. Inexperienced Spartans in gear venus Fre*no Sute Saturday night. For the 15th time this season the veteran coach opened with a different line-up than the previous game. For the upteenth time, he tried mixing hi* three freshmen, three sophomore* and five juniors (the Spartan* have no sen¬ iors) into a cohesive group of basketball players. And for the 12th time thi* season the Spartans walked off the court with a "it's time to go back to the drawing board,** admitted Berry, wiping the sweat off his balding head. "I have to do a better job of defining our players role*. I'm getting too many surprise*." . Berry's biggest surprise' came in the form of 6-2 junior guard Eric William* who »cored 17 points for tbe Spartaan* in the final 14 minute* of play. It wasnt enough however, to pull San Jo*e Sute out of the hole -as Fresno Sute still managed to roll to a 63-48 win. Unlike the Sparun*. there were no surprise* on the Bulldog side of the court. Ron Anderson, at utual, put in hi* obligatory 18 poinu, Bernard Thompson (cooped up hi* six rebounds and added 11 points and Mitch Arnold continued his recent hot streak with a 14-point per¬ formance. The win lifted Fresno Sute's record to 6-4 in the PCAA. and gave the Bulldog* another shot of confidence before uking on sagging Fullerton Sute this Thursday in Fullerton. "I thought we were getting the ball like we needed to," said Fresno Sute Coach Boyd Grant, who as usual wasn't entirely satisfied with the win "But we were hesitating too much and we weren't getting the shots." Thank* in part to the 21 Spartan turnovers, however, Fretno Sute wa* still able to put up enough shou to subdue San Jose's youth movement. Another factor in the game was the early loss of 6-8,20} lb. Spartan forward Matt Fleming, who sprained hi* knee barely five minutes into the game. Fleming, one of San Jose Sute's few upperclassmen, lead the team in scoring during the last four games and was averaging IS.2 points a game. With Fleming in the game, San Jose Sute jumped out to a 7-4 lead behind lay-ups by Ward Ferris and Michael 'It's time to go back to tbe drawing board. I have to do a better job of defining our players roles.' — Berry Dixon,a 14-foot jumper by Stoney Evan*, and a free throw by Ferris. Fresno Sute, meanwhile was suffering from a severe case of clumsinets. After Thompson hit two free throws and Arn¬ old swished a long-range jumper from the ■ left, tbe Bulldogs gave up the ball three consecutive times. First, center Scott Barnes mishandled a pass from Anderson underneath, then Thompson bounced the ball out-of-bounds off his foot, and finally Thompson lost another one off his sto¬ mach while rebounding a Ron Andenon Fre»no Sute finally got it* act together, -and eventually the lead, when Anderson tipped in a jumper by Marvin Carter to tie the game with 12:47 to go in the first half. •Carter then came back and hit two •See Youngster*, Page 14 Spikers dig into own pockets for love of-game' It's a typical practice session for a fath¬ ering of Fresno Sute athletes working intently at their craft. Sweat flows gener¬ ously as bodies are pushed to their limits under the barked commands ofthe coach. Formations are pieced together and battle plans are drawn up. Like so many teams thi* is the type of regiment that the Fresno Sute Men's Vol¬ leyball Club follow*. The difference though lie* in the name. Club. Not team. The 1984 season will mark the eighth year that the Volleyball club ha* been in existence. The club compete* in the eight team Northern California Collegiate Vol¬ leyball League, a league which they won in 1982. The club, take* road trip* a* far north as Chico and like every financially backed team they wear matching uni¬ forms. But unlike financed teams the 20 members of Fre*no Sute*'s Volleyball Club make their organization run by dig¬ ging into their own pockets. "We basically exi*t for the love of tbe game,"coach and former player Jim Pepe That love of volleyball has been put to many te*t» in the team's eight years. Sev¬ eral time* in the pa*t few year* team member* have approached both the Asso¬ ciated Studenu Senate as well as the uni- ver*ity'» athletic director in »earch of both funding recognition. Since then iu been a dead issue because we are just tired of trying anymore." The only thing that the team gets from the university is an allotted period of time in which to practice in the Women's Gym. Other than that team members are strictly bn their own. The li*t of expenses they must handle is long: Gas, Food, Uniforms (Sweats, Jerseys, Shorts. Shoe*), league fees, and the cost of officials at home matches. as a player two teaions before uking over a* the clubt coach thi* year. "Our main goal thi* year it to gain cred¬ ibility and to grow," Pepe laid. "By play¬ ing good, solid volleyball we're hoping that we can get some people out here to watch us. With the proper publicity, we could get the same kind of attendance as women's volleyball.' -Riding "Playing on this team i* definitely a big sacrifice monettrily," Pepe frankly suted. Torrez, who is in his fourth year on the volleyball team, estimate* that each playe .- must come up with at least S150 a year to support the team. The club held a two- day, co-ed volleyball tournament on Jan. 7-8 to raise funds. After expense* the club netted S300 from the tournament. Pepe i* determined to put the team'* financial trouble* aside and concentrate on volleyball thi* year. A physical educa¬ tion graduate student, Pepe, participated basketball team," Torrez said. An interesting aspect of the team it tbe truckload of both playing and coaching experience that is stored in tbe team'* rank*. Pepe is a product of tbe famous Southern Caliiorma beach volleyball game. After honing his playing skill* on the sands Pepe took hi* knowledge to the hardwood where he coached in Lea Arsaeka- at Inglewood High Schoot "The beach game is where the true fun- damenul* of the game are learned since ihe game is played with only.two player* on each tide," Pepe taid. "You have to develop all your drill* in the beach game." Torrez and team male John Riding spirt their volleyball lime between playing anil coaching at Fre*no High School*. Torrez handle* both the boy* and girt* team* at McClane. Riding is in ha second year of handling the boy* team at Hoover and before that wa* an assistant coach at "Between my coaching duties and play¬ ing 1 put in about 30 hour* a week of volleyball," Riding taid. The team ha* tbe benefit of drawing a number of quality high school player* from the highly regarded North Yosemite League which is based in Fresno. Vane Meatcrliaa played four ytart at Hoover and wa* named to tie all-NYL team hi* but two year*. Curt Curtis, another NYL product, played two year* at Govs* West. The team* players are split into Junior Vanity and Vanity team*. Many of thi* year's Vanity players toiled on the JV team until promotion to the Vanity team wa* in order. JV aad Vanity players prac¬ tice together. "We ha vent had a real cohesive team ia the past," Riding taid. "We're trying to put forth a team that'* worth »pon*oriag. The team will pan forward a real profe*> publicity, we could get the u e kind of "We all dream that one day that volley¬ ball will be recognized a* a Division 1 •port acre for'aacn," Torrez taid.
