And the frethman*'* promising collegiate career at Fresno Sute i* right back on schedule, having barely missed a beat. Literally. The story behind Ann's stumbling on the basketball court has been well docu¬ mented in the past month. Fresno State athletic trainer Ed Ferreira found it un¬ usual for a collegiate athlete of Anne's ability to stumble sO often. After all. she had been named finl team All-Califor¬ nia Interscholastic Federation during a sterling career at Buena High School in Ventura. Confused, Ferreira and the Bulldog staff persisted, eventually calling in Dr. William Kennedy, who diagnosed the problem quickly. Ann Menke, the Bul¬ ldogs' 149-pound guard who is all of 18 years old, had an irregular heart beat. And the answer was to implant a pace- To undersund the competitive fire that burns inside this young athlete, you need look no further lhan her response to the news. "The first thing I thought was.' I'm awfully young for this, and I'm healthy too," said Menke. "Then right away I thought about basket ball."Three days after the surgery, Menke was shooting baskets.
