April 9, 1984 LFcgaitoiircE Star Palace concert relives 60s music With that in mind, take me at my word that there were about 700 people at the Star Palace Saturday, reliving the 1960s even though most of them were barely born by then. KFSR, the campus FM radio station, presented Game Theory, New Breed and The Three O'clock to a massive audience that seemed almost to be clamoring for some entertainment. The audience was as varied as IVe seen one be. There were Billiard High School students, long¬ haired people, short-haired people. Mods, the terminally cool and a little kid who mustVe been 12 and sounded like he had tuberculosis. The crowd couldnt even agree on whether they were there to dance or not. The dance floor was packed, but so were the tables surrounding it. The whole place was packed. Were they all there to see The Three O'Clock? I don't think so, because by the lime they got qn stage at 12:10 a.rh., the crowd had slimmed considerably. But those who remained made their presence "We played Fresno six months ago. Where were you?" Michael Querico, the L.A. band's lead singer asked. If you were going to smack a label on the three Review bands, it would sav something like "60s revival music." I came prepared for it, the crowd came dressed for it. and it was pretty great. Mixed in with those terrific songs that I remember from when 1 was six years old, were no less than three Monkees songs. The opening acf, New Breed, was just wonderful. They seemed to pick the best songs of an era, played them well and got the audience onto the dance floor. They also got a number of young women onstage doing the swim, but I dont know if they had intended that to happen. Golly, they played good music. That's What I Like About You.""La Bomba." "Gloria (GLORIA)." And a couple of Monkees tunes. If they can start writing their own material, this band will really bear watching in the future. The audience was primed. Thirty-five minutes later Game Theory came out for a set. And they played well, but not the danceable, fun stuff that New Breed did. The energy level sort of levelled off, and everybody sort of talked through the set. But The Three O'clock brought the levels back up and kept everybody going until just after I The Three O'clock are a lot of fun, but the lead singer is the real focal point of the group, and he doesn't come off as a very mature individual. When he walked through the Star Palace lobby, he told an onlooker: "We're from L.A. ' L.A. So if you're going to chant 'Go Home,' you should add L.A. to the end. 'Go home to L.A.'
