"Many programs dont have national accrediting agencies," he said. "It's im¬ portant to our students that we be accredited." Aside from the occasional "big"issue, such as the one currently being faced, the problems that mark the school's relationship with the administration are rarely significant enough to do any real damage where students are concerned, however, according to Weinstock. "Students are not often aware of this sort of thing," he said. "They are not problems that most students would be familiar with." Clarkson said having people watch¬ ing didn't bother him. "1 like it when I'm working and some little kids watch," he said, mixing some red paint. "Kids always ask if they can help. Sometimes I let them hold my paint brushes. Then, sometimes. 111 sign their name, right along with mine, when I'm done. They get a big kick out of that." Clarkson signs his work "Dano," which he said is what his friends called him at high school. "It's also a name my customers can remember...it's catchy." He was painting the red bow to the wreath Santa was holding. There were no pencil tines to follow; he looked at no picture first, he painted free-hand. "I pounded a lot of pavement to get my customers;" he said. Now he does most of his work for the same shops each year. The bow completed, Clarkson headed back down the windows to do some work on the basketball bear. A few peo¬ ple foJjQwed .to watch, Wen asked 'if he'd ever messed up and'jiad to start.over, he dipped the sponge brush back into the can of paint and said, thoughtfully. "Noooo. I guess I've been lucky. I used to get real frus¬ trated at myself though. And I used to be real slow. Now IVe gotten to the point where things come easy." It all began when he was working at Beverly Manor Convalescant Hospital. "They asked if anyone could paint the windows for Christmas. I only did it for the patients. "In Fresno," he added, "it's bad busi¬ ness not to paint your (shop) windows at Christmas. 1 kind of picked up on that." J? Clarkson said he bought his car with his firsfSeason's earnings, this year he will use the money to help pay his way to tour with a Christian singing group, The Continentals, to Russia and Poland. They will tour this summer. He crossed back to the Santa and switched colors. "Once I get the color in, it's all down¬ hill from there," he said with a grin. It takes about 10 minutes for the paint to fully dry and then he outlines everything in black. The sun was glaring through the win¬ dows, arid often Clarkson would frown and try to shade his eyes. "I'm glad I'm almost through," he said, with relief in his voice. He was referring to his work "Luckily III be done before finals." he said. "Theenginecringdoes come before the windows." Clarkson said he had planned in advance for his Christmas work, by tak¬ ing only IJ units this st I'd be short for time now." he said. Another student stopped and asked Clarkson if he had painted "the one at The Bucket." He said yes. and the stu¬ dent complimented him on his work. Clarkson plans to continue his Christ¬ mas "for another three years, until I graduate. "I really do enjoy it — even if I didn't make much money at it. I'd still do it." he said.-pausing from his work on Santa. "It's fun." J ' IT'S JUST AROUND THE CORNER!
