The ■ show emphasized songs from "Avalon" and the recent live mini album -TJi/High Road," but Roxy threw in a few unexpected surprises. The most entrtaining of them was Man- zanera's instrumental showcase Impossible Guitar" from his most recent solo LP, "Prim¬ itive Guitars." The group (minus Ferry, Mackay.and the backup singers) was at its daring "Impossible Guitar," and Manzanera's guitar work was stunning. The best crowd response was for "Love Is The Drug," the group's well-known hit from 1975. During this and other dance-oriented numbers, Ferry did some awkward but endearing dance moves while the band an audience swayed along. Roxy Music closed out the show with "Editions of You," a driving rocker from their second album. Especially entertaining was Keyboardist Guy Fletcher's synthes¬ izer solo, which cleverly recreated ex- member Brian Eno's solo on the original After the song, the members of Roxy, looking somewhat surprised at the crowd's rapturous response, walked off smiling and waving. The crowd demanded that they return, and when th«y dki Ferry asked with a grin, "Do you want something?" Roxy then launched into one of their big¬ gest British hits, "Do The Strand." They finished the encore with their moving ver¬ sion of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy." The sound in the gym was surprisingly good. Roxy Music's thick and subtle tex¬ tures sounded crisp, although Andy Mack- ay's sax didn't always cut threOgh, at least near the stage. The sound irf the back was reportedly better. ' The young Los Angeles group Berlin opened the show. Best known for their hit "Sex (I'm A...)," the synthesizer-oriented gToup was fronted by Terri Nunn, who looked like a cross between Stevie nicks and Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons. Berlin was relatively forgettable; their songs weren't distinctive and their sound was poor (especially the vocals and guitars). Their theatrics on "Sex (I'm A...)" were clever, however, and Nunn was engaging throughout. The crowd response to Berlin was enthusiastic, and they were called back All in all. the Vintage Days show was a rousing success. Roxy Music's slick and powerful show must have won some new fans for them. Fresno was lucky to be the first United States city to witness Ferry and company's powerhouse 1983 tour. If Fri¬ day's show was any indication, this may be the year that Roxy will finally break through in this country. Vintage Continued from page 1 Back at the Intramural Field, the Push Carl competition was underway, as par¬ ticipants pushed metal-framed carts a total of 330 yards each round, for time. After several rounds had been'success- mpleted, the rainclouds bursted into an unmerciful downpour, sending everyone scurrying under judges' tables, into cars, under a stranger's umbrella, or any other kind of shelter they could find. In between sud¬ den spurts of rain and hail, the judges made two more attempts to resume the competition, but Mother Nature seemed Later Saturday evening the boomtown Carnival got off to a somewhat wet and shaky start, but drew a considerable crowd nevertheless.
