Sports Fresno Connection sparks Cal Poly SAN LUIS OBISPO — A group of Fresno natives starred last night in the CSUF-Cal Pory soccer game. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, those players were playing for the Mustangs as Fresno suffered a 3-1 loss to Cal Poly in a non-conference game. The loss drops the 18th-ranked Bull¬ dogs to 14-3-2 overall and hurts their chances of receiving a post-season playoff bid. "This is a game I would like to forget," Bulldog coach Jose FJgorriaga said. "We Mere flat and played with no intensity." The Mustangs jumped on top early and the 'Dogs were never able to recover Tom Gfeason, a freshman from Fresno's Hoover High School, got the Mustangs gorrrg with a header that beat Bulldog goalie Chato Elgornaga at the 4:22 mark. Gleason was assisted on the goal by Bull ard High School product Alex Crozier For Gleason, it was his 15th goal of the year At the 26:00 mark, Gleason was back at it as he beat the younger Elgornaga on an unassisted goal to put the Mustangs up, 2 0. Gleason's 16th score set a new Cal Polv qoal mark for a single season The first half ended with Cal Poly ahead. 20, and the Bulldogs still trying to get on track The Bulldogs, besides play ing flat, were also in the difficult position of playing without Tony DiGiovanni, Jim Solomon, Andy Rico, Mark Masich and Denis Odorico The injured five have been spark piugs in this surprising At the 64:12 mark, another Hoover product, Curtis Apsey, scored for the Mustangs. Apsey scored Cal Pok/s third goal to put the host team up, 3-0. The Bulldogs' goal was a meaningless one, coming with only five minutes left in the game. Ahmad Khattale scored his first goal of the year when he put the ball past Mustang goalie Randy Smith after CSUF's Randy Prescott hit the side bar with a penalty kick. The Bulldogs outshot the Mustangs, 16-8, but luck was not on the side of "Dogs this night, as they had a number of shots that hit the net standards. The Bulldogs' usually solid defense was also an area of concern for Fresno coach Elgornaga. He saw his back line fall apart on all three Mustang goals. The absence of DiGiovanni and Rico was a large part of the problems "Our defense didn't play its usual game," Dgorriaga said. "This was one of those games that hve been giving us prob¬ lems all year — the games against teams that are less talented (than) our team."
