Must be able to attend weekly Senate meetings on Tuesdays at 3:00 p.m. and be able to participate in Committee meetings of the Associated Students. Applications are being taken in the Associated Students office room 316. Application dseadltne is December 8, 1980 at 5:00 p.m. "STUDENTS WORKING FOR STUDENTS" Photos bv John Biek Experiments and demonstrations are an important part of Chem¬ istry 1A. They lend an added dimension to the lecture. Dr. George B. Kauffman conducted a variety of experiments last Tuesday. They included an jmmonium dichromate 'volcano,* sodium explosion and a potassium chlorate 'sugar rocket.* In the photo on the left, Dr. Kauffman showed the 'sugar rocket' to hi* class. They stood at a safe distance. Then he ignited the rocket, (center). Flame and smoke were the end result. Her superviser, John Morris, let her conduct the advanced band once in a while. And at VVawona she con¬ ducted the symphonic band's spring concert. 'When you're a student teacher, the kids know that and they act differently,' Tighlman said. 'The teacher has more authority, but they'd let me take the dass, letting me be there to help.' Presently Tighlman teacher at Sunset, Mary McLeod Bethune, Martin Luther King and George Washington Carver schools, .working with her students individually and In small groups. Tilghman teacher in primarily minority schools and said that the fact she is black probably gives her an advantage with her students. The younger kids took up to the teacher; I was Just with older kids before (in student teaching). Th* Junior high kids drove me crazy.* Tighlman now instructs fourth, fifth and sixth graders. The 24-year-old clarinetist said that full-time teaching is different than her student work. "You have your own set of keys to the school and you get money,* Tighlman laughed. 'All I got during student teaching was units.* In her work Tighlman teaches a 'lira* bit* of musk theory, but mainly concentrates on teaching the In¬ strument. 'Everybody wants to play flute; in fact; the music stores ran out of flutes,* she said. 'Kids like the clarinet and strings too. There aren't too many brass. I try to push things like the cello and trombone. I don't like to have a lot of drums " Tighlman said for the most part, her students are 'really good. The kids you can't control, I get rid of them. It's their decision (to play an instrument); usually they stick to it.* All the students 'sound bad* when they begin to play, but the skills usually come pretty quickly, ■ Tighl¬ man added. This year my strings are doing a tot better, but my clarinets sound terrible because they don't practice.* Although she is primarily a wood¬ wind specialist, Tighlman can deal with strings.
