Many prosperous musicians have left 'heathen* music for the less nsonetarily lucrative 'heaven* musk. Big names like B. J. Thomas, Bob Dylan and Dan Peek (formerly of America) have joined established Christian stars such as Larry Norman, Barrv McCuire. Randy Stonehlll, Matthew Ward, and scores more. But the best of all might be Bruce Cockbum. Canadian Bruce Cockburn (pro¬ nounced Co-Bum) has been awarded the Canadian "folkslnger of the Year Award* four times. He is an ac¬ knowledged star In his homeland. Cockbum also gained many fans in the states a few months back with the single 'Wondering Where the Lions Are* off his prior album. His newest offering is called Humans and its a superb effort. Most Christian music is technically and electrically awful. Bruce Cock- bum's music doesn't suffer from the maladies the majority of Christian music suffers from. No syrupy strings; no overwrought harmonies; no sugarsweet, shallow lyrics. Cock¬ bum music is tough and blunt. He is not overwhelmed by Christianity as Dylan and others have been. He sees the world realistically, not through stained-glass windows. Cockbum does not always sing di¬ rectly about Cod. In fact, if he did not sUte that he was 'bom again', it would be quite difficult to recog¬ nize. He even says dogshit. Some of the title of the cuts are 'Cuerilla Betrayed*, Tokyo*, 'Facist Archi¬ tecture* and 'How I Spent My Fall Vacation.' Cockbum even has the gall to criticize the clergy in "Grim Travellers*. Ministers work-work on the Movement of goods also on the movement of human beings as it we were so many cattle. The music on Humans might be classified as'street folk.* There is a definite toughness to the Cockbum sound, with a grey feeling that evokes images of cold, grim, big city winters. Cockbum attacks his acoustic guitar with abandon, setting the pace for the tunes, highlighted by the sax of Pat LaBarbera.
