According to Mendonca, while every
standard is carefully measured, some pits
make a bar's height appear higher than it
actually is. She says the pit at Fresno State
gives that illusion.
"It's the way the runway slopes up,"she

for a competition."
Pagani says Mendonca is not extremely
strong or fast for a high jumper, but she
makes up for it with her 5-9" height, and
her excellent concentration.
"She'sconsistent."says Pagani. "That's
why she did so well in high school. If you
going to win a lot of meets."
Last year in Bakersfield, Mendonca hit
6-1 in the California slate high school
championships, a mark that was the best
in the U.S. for prepsters in 1983.
"It was really a weird situation." she
recalls. "I had to move my steps over three
feet because the shot put ring was in the
way, so I wasn't expecting to do that well.
I was really relaxed, though and I felt
good and things just seemed to fall into
