Paga 10/Saptembar 8. 1981—Dally Collegian Polo squad reaches for top ten Sports Editor Last season, coach Don Laster's Bulldog water polo squad finished the year with an impressive No. 11 national ranking, but as nice as that was, Laster is looking for even better things in the 1981 campaign. 'We finished just out of the top 10, and now I don't think there is any reason to believe that we can't get into it this year,' he said last week. But Laster and his team definitely have its work cut out for it this year as they are dealing with a loaded and demanding schedule that includes many of the finest teams in the country. Topping last season's overall won-loss record of 21-8 will be no easy chore. CSUF's only drawbacks may be its geographical location and the league it belongs to. Almost all of the nation's water polo powerhouses are situated on the West Coast, with Stanford head¬ ing the list as the defending national And last year, the Bulldogs could only manage a fifth-place finish in the PCAA post-season tournament due to the tough forces of UC Irvine, Pepper- dine, UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Long Beach, teams that were all ranked among the top seven in the country. One of the Bulldogs' main goals is to finish in the top three in this year's PCAA tourney, which would earn them a berth in the NCAA tournament. The water polo team, which starts the year Off with an alumni game Sat¬ urday, will be a young one, with only three seniors and five returning starters. Heading the returnees will be senior' Matt Weinheimer, the second-leading scorer last year, and Randy Biglione, a junior who led the Bulldogs in steals. Other returnees include senior Mike Crgich, juniors "Ron Meyer-Hagen and Eric Fredrickson, and sophomores Rich Kahn and Scott Chamberlain. Laster will be relying heavily on new¬ comers including Ken McDougall of Cuesta JC and Jeff Ammann, who was a member of the 1979 state junior college championship team from Colden West. Other welcome additions this year include two top College of Sequoias recruits in goalie Ben Blankenship and WATER POLO continued on page 12 Only four starters back, volleyball returns With only four returning starters, it would seem that the CSUF volleyball team is headed for a rebuilding year this season, but on the contrary, nth- year coach Leilani Overstreet feels her Bulldogs will be as tough as ever. 'It's almost like we're starting over with all the new faces around,' she said last week. 'But the girls are reaching a good level pretty fast. We're going to have a fine team." CSUF finished third in the Northern California Athletic Conference last sea¬ son with an 8-4 record. All of those losses came at the hands of conference champion University of Pacific and runner-up Stanford. It wasn't a bad showing at all, considering the fact that UOP ended the year with a No. 2 nation¬ al ranking -nd Stanford was No. 9. "I really hope we can improve on that third place showing,* said Over- street. "We're going to work hard to knock off Stanford, and I know it will be tough, but we'll do our best to beat UOP."
