There are fewer still, even among members of the organization, who know what its Initials stand for. The 'Movimiento Estudianpil Chicano de Aztlan' (MEChA.) roughly trans¬ lates to Chicano Student Movement of the Southwest. CSUF Education Professor Theresa Perez, director of a federally funded bilingual education program in the School of Education and adviser to the student organization, said that MEChA was formed in the mid-1960s "during the great upheavals' of the student 'It has maintained its activism,' Perez said. 'It- is one of the most active student organizations on campus.' Perez said that in the beginning, the group concentrated on fighting against the Vietnam War and discrimination while trying to get more Hispanics into the political system by getting them to regi! ir to vc Today, Perez said, MEChA continues its voter outreach efforts while working against U.S. involvement in El Salvador. She also said the group continues its fight for civil rights by defending the bilingual ballot and by helping some candidates for public office who are responsive to MEChA concerns. Jerry Conzales, the CSUF president of MEChA, said that the- group's main purpose is 'making sure doors are open to everybody.' Conzales stressed that MEChA en¬ courages its members to 'get involved in outside activities" at the university. He said that although in toe past Focus on CSUF clubs First In a weakly series the group had more members, he saw a revitalization of the membership taking place at least partially because of moves by the Reagan Administration that Conzales feels are anti-minority. However, MEChA is not just involved in the political arena, Perez said. Every year the group sponsors the Chicano Youth Conference at CSUF and a week of Cinto de Mayo activities. Both are aimed at making valley Hispanics and others more aware of what this grow¬ ing minority group has done in the past, and what they can do in the future. Perez said that students can get more information about MEChA by calling Conzales at 251-8712. The Porterville State Hospital is seeking advocates on a volunteer basis to assist in the development of client's education programs. Training will be provided in Etesno. Her appointment was made during the summer by CSUF Athletic Tirector Russ Sloan after he fired her ..om the basketball post. As interim assistant athletic director, the end of last semester'to do more teaching. Milutinovich began her career at CSUF In 1978 when she served as the assistant coach for the varsity basket¬ ball squad and head coach for the junior varsity squad. In 1979-80 she served as interim head basketball coach and became head coach a year later. In the spring of 1980, Milutinovich acted as tournament di¬ rector for the WAIAW Regional Soft¬ ball Tournament and that fall was the assistant coordinator for the Japanese All-Star exhibition volleyball match. During the 1979-80 season Milutino¬ vich was also a graduate intern for the Bulldog Foundation where she ac¬ quired experience In the field of ad¬ ministration and fund raising. Before coming to CSUF In 1978, Milutinovich did graduate work at Cal Poly Pomona In the field of physical education and athletic administration. She had held head basketball and softball coaching positions at Penis High School and was the department chairperson for the co-education and physical education departments at Per- ris Valley Junior High School.
