THE DAILY COLLEGIAN Put on your dancin' shoes We have dolls but no guys By Holly Heath Where have all the young men gone; Some place other than Social Dance classes There has consistently been a shortage of men who sign up for the class each semester More women than men take the class because dancing is usually an activity more familiar to women, said Lola Owens- by, instructor Most men do not know how to dance, and therefore, they are reluc¬ tant to take the class she said But once the men learn to dance, they She teaches such dances as the waltz, foxtrot, rumba, swing, cha cha and traditional ballroom danc¬ ing Swing is by far the favorite dance of students, according to Owensby. McCinnis began belly dancing . shortly after she joined a local singing telegram service as its belly dancing specialist. She also worked for that firm for two years as a 'Red Hot Mama' character. She recently left that job to work for Desert Dance-O-Crams, a firm that sends belly dancers out to dance for parties and special occasions. She relates some interesting tales about changing costumes in strange places. 'One time I dressed in a fig orchard, and I 've seen the inside of a lot of gas station bathrooms." The work is not easy. McCinnis said there are times when she is booked for a party in Madera and one in Fresno one half of an hour later. 'One time I went to the Fig Garden Villager to belly dance for some res¬ taurant workers, and this guy grab¬ bed me and pulled me into a closet. Someone on the outside locked to door and I was never so scared,' McCinnis said. She escaped with her dignity, but her mother bought her a 'watch cat' key chain after that. The presentation, to be made Nov. 10, honors the memory of an 1826 graduate of Colby College who is considered to be America's first martyr to freedom of the press. Lovejoy, an abolitionist newspaper editor, was murdered in a riot in Alton, Illinois, Nov. 7, 1837, by a pro-slavery mob. He was defending the liberty of the press and the right of an editor to advocate unpopular Professor Tatarian Joins a long list of distinguished Journalists who have received the award, including Arthur Hays Sulzberger of The New York Times, John Hay Whitney of the New York Herald Tribune, syndicated col¬ umnist Carl T. Rowan, Los Angeles Times publisher Otis Chandler. The After game dance There will be an after game dance to¬ morrow night in the Judging pavilion on Barstow Ave. from 10p.m. to 2 a.m. The band will be 'Boy Howdy*, and admission is S3 per person, or $5 per couple. The dance Is sponsored by the Ag & Home Eccouncil. Review was well done, but after a few gun misfires, a couple of bad slaps, and one mace pen that went off after It was back In Linda's purse, the play lost some of its credibility. Still, Ryan's energy, poise and talent in the fitted role of Alan, is the whole And perhaps the most annoying part about the whole play is that we leave the theater plagued for the next 24 hours with whistling, hummina or singing 'As Time Goes By.'
