Should an unmarried man and wonun with children be considered a legal family? Those would be pretty hard questions to Rive definite ves-no answers to, bul Professor Franklin Ng of the CSUF Anthropology Department was recently on a committee that tackled lust such questions Ng worked on a regional planning committee that raised questions about today's families The questions they raised were dealt with at this summer's White House Conference on the Family. The government may redefine the meaning of the family But what seems to be a fairly simple, subject on the surface has become 'very controversial" in the past few years, Ng said There were no easy answers, not even to tin- definition of a family 'CrouDS such as Mormons and Cath¬ olics have very strong feelings as to how the familv should be defined.' Ng said The traditional picture of the family, as it appears in the minds of most Amen- TOMORROW cans, is one of a father, a mother, and maybe one or two children, Ngsaid. But many families in America are quite different from that stereotype, he said. .There are single-parent households arid extended families that include grandparents, aunts and uncles, along with other "variations," he said. The government is taking another look at different families to decide what types of situations should be supported in gov¬ ernment no) icy. This will give a chance for groups, such as Asian families with 10 or 12 members a chance to voice their special needs, like finding adeauate houslna Ng participated in a Family Service Association committee made up of peo¬ ple from many different backgrounds, who were asked to give their views on the future of families. Their results were recently published by I amilv Services Association. On Ns's committee were a professor of religion, a historian and an English professor he said. Other similar committees were formed throughout the country, he said. With such diverse representatives, it was (".'ficult to come to an agreement on answers to family issues. The answers varied from the different oarticipants.' One thing they suggested, though, was 'hat families have historically last¬ ed, despite the social strains put on them by such things as the industrial 'revolu¬ tion. Ng said that would mean the 'dooms¬ day" predictors, who claim the' family system is crumbling, are wrong. "The family may have become more resilient and may be able to weather all these crises everyone's talking about," Ng said.
