The people In "The Island'' iue no such Ingenuity. Their Mist-nee Is Just that; an exist¬ ence. At bare subsistence level. they survive by sheer force of will. 'The Island." strives for great- nets and comes very close. There are places where the film drafts. Principally this is because there Is no dialogue and American viewers expect It. But dialogue *ooId be deemed out of place. The film Is eloquent without stressing Its appraisal of Japa¬ nese peasant life. The acting is good, but not out¬ standing. Many people who see The Island" will be disappoint¬ ed. When Americans think of real- -na. they think or perhaps two things. Tbe first would be sex and the second consideration would -**• lhat It waa written by Tennes¬ see Williams. There Is no sex, unless the dote affiliation with the elements ud tbe earth are overt sexual experiences. There are no intrlca- ties of plot inherent In Tennessee Wllllams-type films. There are no trend Ian overtones. There la a "'■•■' movie about believable Maple. Additionally there Is a visual LARSOX bonus. The camera work sets off'l. the Island and the Inland Sea to perfection. Even though the fllm: may not be a. photocrapliic mas¬ terpiece, ihe -implicit)- u refresh¬ ing. Th,' film is the second part of a Fine Arts Theatre presentation Which opened last night.
