Poge Four-- ■ — ■ -The Frosne State College Ceflegfan "—: State's 1963 Spring Sports Off To Fast \cytkiaik Another Title For Miller No one knows when man really be-;an sports activities, but you can be sure there was a sports writer around to select an all-star team Id what ever the sport was. Times Uave not changed much In that respect. Today you can read about an all-star team when ev you pick up a paper or magazine or hear about one on the radio or television. The Collegian Is no exception and this time the Fresno State ecrtbes got together to select the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association basketball squad. With the help of past Collegian sports editor Jack McClenesnan. and Fred McPherson, Collegian sports writer, we have cotno up with this year's CCAA "dream FSC Front Line Tho front line.may sound like there Is some prejudice ln the se¬ lections, but a look at the records would bear out our picks. At center we had lo ro with the Bulldogs' top scorer in Tony Burr. Burr has been a consistent re- bounder and scoring threat for Coach Harry Miller's squad all The forwards are Burr's team¬ mates, Maurice Talbot and Tom Jacobsen. Talbot bos been a "tiger" under the hoards all sea¬ son, leading the league In re¬ bounds and finishing league's tblrd top scorer. "Jake" has been a, standout for the Uulldof**. for two seasons both at f-uard and forwards He has shown local fans that he la only a top scoring threat bat an ontsUndlng team man hustler on defense. Two men In the league who would bave received serious eiJ"rriilon but who dropped o school at mid-term were Long Beaeh State's high scoring Stan Anderson and San Diego's 6-3 center. Bob Mackey. .Dark Court If anyone can be considered a unanimous choice for the would have to be Cal Poly's Jun¬ ior guard Bob Horwath. Horwath rmn away with the league scoring crown and has been a one man team for the Mustangs. The other guard is San Diego's "mighty mite" Bob Showcraft. The 5-10 guard took the scoring slack left by Mackey and kept the Aitecs near the top. Showcraft also was tho team's piaymakcr and a top defensive man. Now that our egoa as sports writers has been satisfied for the time being we can sit back and watch for the baseball stars materialiso. Well let the coach*-* and other writers in the league pick their all-stan. We of course think our fire to be the best Close Call Fresno State's track hopes came close to disaster last week when tbe Bulldogs' top weigbtman, Mick Murray was speared with e Jave¬ lin In an accident during prac¬ tice. The javelin made a hole about the slxe of a dime and as Inch end a half deep In Hurray's left . shoulder. Luckily Murray will be able to compete aa the wound will aot interfere with his right arm which he uses la the weight event*. Golf, coached by"Larry Pape, will get underway soon. Baseball, track, swimming and goll teams are all 3iven excellent chances to capture California Collegiate Athletic Association tiiles this year. 3 Bulldogs Redshirted ByAFL Three of Fretno Stale's foot¬ ball standouts have been chosen by the American Football League during their third annual "red- shirt draft."
