Poge Four —— The Fresno Stale College Collegian — ^^^^^■H Bulldogs Win In Weekend Double-Heade Miller's Charges Beat San Fernando, Gaucho Fives To Stay In Race Fresno State's hustling Bulldogs are back in the thick of the California Collegiate Athletic Association basketball race following two "must" wins over San Fernando State and the University of California at Santa Barbara. Coach Harry Miller's charges revenged an earlier defeat : the bands ol tbe Santa Bar-tv-' barn quintet with a pressure packed 59-5! win Saturday. The victory was the ninth straight tor the Bulldogs. Friday, tho Bulldog hoopsters trounced San Fernando, 89-61 with Ron Neff sparking the way. Neff entered the game after seven minutes and threw in IE points before Intermission. Hi ended up with 22 markers. I tout San Fernando gave the Bull¬ dogs some trouble in the opening minutes as the southland team led at one point by eight. But Miller's forces quickly tied it up, then scored 27 straight points before San Fernando could hit the scor¬ ing column again. In Santa, narbnm the Bulldogs found tho going a little rougher as they played before an over- flow crowd In a real heart stop¬ per. The Fresno squad had to come from behind to defeat (he Gaachos aa Santa Barbara led 4S-48 with only about fire min¬ ute-, left cm the clock. Tony Burr hit on two straight Jumpers to up the Bulldogs ahead with about Tour minutes left to play and Fresno kept their lead. Tom Jacobson clinched the tri¬ umph with three foul shots and a layup In the final 1:5*1 of action. Jake Hits Jacobson was fouled with two minutes to go and made good on the one and one. The Bulldogs stole the ball and "Jake" drove la for two markers then later sunk his final free shot. High Point man for the game waa Bulldog forward Maurice Talbot with 21 markers, llin-r. Neff, and Jacobson hit SB, 11, and 10 points respectively. The two weekend victories left the Bulldogs and Gauchos with 6-2 league marks. San Diego State stands In first place with a 5-1 mark preceding their Saturday night game with Los Angeles State.. This weekend the Bulldogs will faco the Titecs from San Diego and a win for Miller's squad would put the CCAA race in a three way deadlock. The game is set for Friday In the Fresno State gymnasium. Saturday, the Bulldogs face Long Beach State to wrap up their league home games. Their final league tilt Is with Los An¬ geles State in the southland. Dr. Evans Will Leave For Sudan Dr. Ralph Evans, professor of education, will leave soon for Sudan to replace Dr. Raymond Harrison, according to Dr. Ste¬ phen Ballou, chairman of the sec¬ ondary education department. Dr. Harrison will teach at the college this summer. Dr. John Martin, who taught In the music department last se¬ mester, will take over Dr. Evans position. Euless Park may be the toughest foe the Bulldogs will play all year. At the very least, the All-Stars will have the toughest pitching staff. With the addition of nine pitchers announced recently, tbe All-Stars now have a 14-man mound start headed by three liu.-l- ers from major league rosters— Truman Clevanger of the Yank¬ ees. Dick Ellsworth of the Cubs, and Wade Blasingame of Mil¬ waukee. Tho latest additions included five e*>FSC stars, Jerry MacDon¬ ald, Oene Graves, Bobby Dolg, Gary Modrell, and Jack Hannah. MacDonald, an A1LCCAA choice last year, was recently signed by the New York Met*. Dolg pitched for the Fresno Giants last year while Modi-ell and Hannah worked fop Red Sox nnd Angels farm clubs respectively. Rounding out the list of pitch¬ ing additions were Dale Williams from the Dodgers' farm system. San Francisco farmhands John Pregcmer and Jack Blchm, and Jim Hansen from the Red Sox chain. Four bitters were also added to the list of those who've accepted Invitations to play. Heading the group was former Fresno State great Augic Carrldo, now with Salt Lake City of tho Pacific Coast League.
