HICKMAN Bob Deane, a senior geography major who took out a year to work and tolir Europe, advises people going overseas to study the countries first. "Reading about the countries beforehand, learning something of their cultures and knowing where things are will save time and energy after they reach their destination." Deane worked six'months at a service station and then spent six months on a leisurely tour of the Dnfled States and Europe. He and two other men left Fresno In an^ojd car which they lost In a Texas blizzard. By bus they went to New York and then by ship to Spain. During the course of the Jour- ney, Deane traveled by car, foot, train and bicycle. Much of the trip was made alone and he says, "It's more relaxed that way and you're net tied to one person." Learning to travel, Deane ex¬ plained. Is Important. "It's not natural and has to be learned." He suggests traveling light and carrying a knapsack rather than suitcases. "Wear warm clothes if you go In the fall and carry only essential articles." Graduate Receives AF Commission Vincent R. Camplsi, Fresno State College graduate, received his commission as second lieuten¬ ant In the US Air Force recently at Lackland Air Force Base. Tex. Lt. He Indicated that youth hotels He found, ihe English and Span- found in most European countries are clean, economical and excel¬ lent for the traveller. "You meet people traveling like yourself and they pass on Information about where to go and where to stay and what to do." The Orovllle youth found most European universities will permit students to go to museums and art galleries free and allow stu¬ dents to eat in the university restaurants at half price. For transportation to Europe, Deane says ships are fine. He said tramp steamers are not particu¬ larly good because they take longer and cost almost as much as regular liners. The rail ls a good time to travel. Deane believes. "The Eu¬ ro peaiTBTiTe m" more~a greeabte- and- open than In the tourist season."
