E. Foreman (Reprinted from the Riverside Press Enterprise) Back in the early 1930's. Dick Bagdasarian was one of the most promising students in the drama department at Fresno State College. In addition to winning high praise for performances in a number of college plays, he helped direct several productions. After he graduated and was working as a grape buyer in the vineyards around Fresno, he continued to work with the drama department in the evening. The head of the department wanted him to continue in the drama field, even offered him a position as a drama teacher at the college. But Bagdasarian was already making more money in grapes than he would as a full college professor. So for 30 years the Bagdasarian drama career languished while the former college actor became increasingly involved in grape growing and marketing, eventually becoming one of the major growers and packers in the Coachella Valley. But once an actor, always an actor. And so, recently Dick Bagdasarian finally made his dramatic debut to a nationwide audience, even though the audience saw only a cartoon caricature of him and heard his voice only in three lines. The debut came about because while Dick was submerging his thespic ambitions to become a successful rancher, his younger brother, Ross Bagdasarian, was less successful in shaking off the show business bug. After an up-and-down career in the theater, Ross suddenly found himself, through a flair for clowning, a knack for song1 writing and an ability to play tricks with a tape recorder, the impressario of a national television show. The show is 'The Alvin Show," featuring the three chip¬ munks Ross created and through whom he made a number of hit records under the name of David Seville.
