SF STATE BACKS NAME CHANGE PROPOSAL The San Francisco State Col¬ lege Faculty Council hss en¬ dorsed Urn proposed state college name change originally suggested by Fresno State College. A faculty bulletin received ln the! FSC Public Information of¬ fice, states that the SFH council voted to change the sames ot the IT state colleges to "California State College at..." The San Francisco council said they thought the name change to "be good," and gave credit to FSC for Initiating the action. Dr. William C. Beatty, profes¬ sor of anthropology here, origin¬ ally submitted a memorandum to the FSC faculty council propos¬ ing the change. The council en¬ dorsed the proposal, forwarding coplea to each of tbe 17 state col¬ leges and the office of the chan¬ cellor of the state college system. San Francisco State Is the first of tho other schools to take ac¬ tion on the memo. Dr. Beatty will present hli opinions at a meeting of the edu¬ cation committee ot the County- City Chamber of Commerce In the Chamber offices at (331 Fresno Street tomorrow at 4 PM. Dr. Basil O. Gallagher, the highly out-spoken and much ma¬ ligned first chancellor, resigned three weeks ago. He returned to New York as president of the City College of New Tork. Since Gallagher's resignation. Dr. Dumke has been the most prominently discussed candidate for^the position. A reporter told the governor at his news conference last week that the AFL-CIO Federation of Teachers opposed Dumke, with one spokesman terming him a "Nixon Republican." Miss Bloch, one of the world's tew specialists ln the lute will sing and play songs ranging from the 13th to the 17th century. Her performance will cover the art songs as well ss the folk and dancing music of the times. Her. appearance here Is being sponsored by the FSC Fine Arts Board. Fresno City Fire Department to chop down a door and don gas masks to check on some smoking hams In the agricul¬ ture division's smoke house. According to the campus fire¬ men, someone saw smoke coming from the smokehouse and pulled an alarm box ln the poultry unit. The alarm was automatically sent to the city fire department. Usually a sign la posted on the door of the smoke house when the smoking of . meats is underwsy. This time no sign was up... _. .. . With no way ot exactly knowing where the smoke was coming from, campus firemen chopped a hole ln the door to gain entry. The volume of. smoke waa caused by a buildup ln the vents. Firemen said this occurs "every once In awhile." After the sirens had quieted and the city had rolled their big red trucks back to roost, campus firemen donned gas masks and en¬ tered (he smoking chamber. They traced the smoke to. a stove burning hickory eawdust. . Evan the baron wss not .done when the firemen arrived. Debaters Tell Plans The campus debaters, off to a winning semester with recent' vic¬ tories in Reno, Stockton and at the University of the Pacific, will compete In four more speech tourneys during the semester. Along with colleges and unl- yerslties trom 10 Western states, FSC will attend the Fl Kappa Delta, honorary debate fraternity, regional championships Apr. 12, 13 and 14. Spring Sing Is Planned Fraternities, sororities a other organizations are-new pre¬ paring for the fifth annual Phi Mu Spring Sing, which, will take place March 18 at 7:30 PM in the Fresno High School auditorium. There'will be competitions in group singing ln three divisions— fraternities, sororities and inde¬ pendents. The winner of each di¬ vision will win a trophy. One of the winners will win the sweepstakes trophy. Sigma Alpha Epsilon has won the trophy for two consecutive years. If they win this year,, they may keep the tro¬ phy. A part Of the program will be a community sing.
