Financial Aid Is. . . In its simplest definition,, financial aid is money that helps you pay the cost of your education. The money comes from several sources—the federal or state governments, local lending institutions and, often, the University. Aid is available as grants (awards that need not be repaid!, loans (awards that must be repaid), scholarships and/or work-study assignments. Specific programs are listed on the reverse of this page. Prospective students should apply for aid at the same time that they apply for admission; con tin iling students must reapply each year. ''Jampus-based prugrams" include, NDSL. SEOG, CWSP, EOPG, NSL and NSS. 5. Financial aid eligibility is the difference between a student's cost of education and his/her resources. 6. Resources include the amount which may reasonably be expected from the student, his/ber spouse and his/her parent's). This also includes Veteran's Admini¬ stration and Social Security Administration benefits, Department of Rehabilitation benefits, student employ¬ ment earnings, savings and scholarships. a student 7. To be eligible for federal student 'aid, must be either.. . 1 _~—_ a. A U.S. citizen, or b. A U.S. national or permanent resident, citizen of the Northern Mariana Islands, permanent resident of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, or are in the U.S. for other than a temporary purpose and intend to become a permanent resident. In order to meet the last criterion, a student must possess an 1-171 or an M6-.A, both of which are approval notices to apply for permanent residence, OR an 1-94 endorsed either "conditional entrant status", "indefinite parole* or "employment authorized "/"adjustment applicant." In arMition, the student may be eligible if be/she haa been granted asylum and been given voluntary departure for a period of. one year. Persona in the U.S. on sn Fl or F2 student visa are NOT eligible. For the 1980-81 award period, an "independent* student is one who: a. Has not and will not be claimed as an exemption for Federal income tax purposes by any person except his/her spouse for the calendar years 1979 or 1980. b. Has not received and will not receive financial assistance of more than $760 from his/her parent(s) during the calendar years 1979 or 1980. c. Has not lived or will not live for more than six weeks in the home of a parent during the years 1979 or I960. Whan yon apply for financial aid, yonr SAAC ia analyzed by the College Scholarship Service and forwarded to the Financial Aids Office at CSUF. If you are eligible, you will then be offered a combination, or "package." of grants, loans, scholarships and/or Work-Study employment to meet your need.
