A third of these women will die because the cancer was detected too late, Why, with all the modern technology, were so many breast lumps detected too late? The reason is simple. Too many women don't bother to examine their '■■ own breasts. The importance of breast self-exam¬ ination cannot be _—eremphasized, according to Linda 'Thiol, a student intern with the American Cancer Soc¬ iety. Early detection it> important, said ' Thiel, because 96 percent of the. lumps are found by the women themselves. Many lumps are also found by their male sex partners. -. The survival rate goes up with early detection. Eighty-five percent of women whose cancer is detected before it has metastasized (spread to other parts of the body) have a five-year survival rate. They recommend examining your breasts during a bath or shower when hands glide easily over wet skin. Use your right hand to examine your left breast and vice Step two is exsmtning your breasts before a mirror with your arms at your sides. Next, raise your anna over your head and look for any changes in the contour of each breast. Left and right breasts will pot exactly match, but regular inspection will show what is abnormal. Step three is examining your breasts lying down. Put a pillow under your right shoulder. Place right hand behind your head. This will distribute the tissue more evenly.
