Recently, the group has updated its approach and style to a futuristic stand¬ point. While still maintaining the ele¬ ments of elegance, style, humor, and harmony that have always defined Manhattan Transfer, the group has projected these elements into the future, taking on a "futuristic, depression- modem orientation.* The group's latest album, 'Exten¬ sions,* reflects the changes in then- musical and visual approaches. Orche¬ stration has been replaced by more synthesized sounds, and a jazz influence dominates the album. Included on the album are a vocal arrangement of Weather Report's "Birdland" (which the group has re¬ leased as a single), the Coleman Haw¬ kins version of "Body snd Soul,* with lyrics by the late Eddie Jefferson, and "Wacky Dust," recorded originally by Ella Fitzgerald. Since the release of 'Extensions' the group has appeared on the cover of Downbeat magazine and was lauded in the feature story for its creations of jazz music in four-part harmony. There will be two performances tonight at 7:30 and 10 p.m. in the CSUF Residence Dining Hall. Tickets are 16 advance and CSUF students and $7.60 general admission and at the door.
