With the penalties imposed this year on" them, Williams is philosophic about his chances of playing in the NCAA play¬ offs. 'Evidently, ft just wasn't meant to be for us,'he said. He may be correct in his appraisal of the situation, 'but despite the un¬ fortunate luck he has found, his college career is still one of the best ever at CSUF. In his first two years here, he averaged 12.9 points a'game and 6.7 rebounds the first year and 13.9 arid 8.1 the second year. In this, his final year, with two games, perhaps more, remain¬ ing, he is averaging almost 12 points and eight rebounds a contest and has been noticed by the professional ranks. Not that he wasn't noticed before. In his first year in college, he played, under Boyd Crant, who Was then the coach at the college of Southern Idaho. His achievements as a freshman promp¬ ted some college powers to bid for him, but luckily for CSUF, Crant was able to persuade him to accompany him to CSUF. 'Art was wanted by Brigham Young, Wyoming and Weber State. We were very fortunate to get him," said Crant. More importantly, he has been a team leader. Not necessarily through motivating his teammates, but through example. Williams is basically calm and lets his actions on the court speak for him. "Art is quiet,* Crant said. "He's not going to tell anybody what to do or how to play. His leadership definitely comes from his playing.' His collegiate basketball days about over, he has a slim chance in the pros, basketball or football. He has received requests for information from a number of NBA clubs but the surprising one was from the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL. Crant, for one, thinks Williams would do fine with a pigskin instead of a round- ball. 'I think he'd be a hell of a tight end,* he said.
