California State University, Fresno Collegian Sports Tuesday, November 3,1987 Bulldogs stun San Diego St. Lopes, McArtor starjn exciting five-game clash By Kendall Kerr Sports Writer Many people don't like Mondays, but that's definitely not the case for the Fresno State volleyball team which up¬ set San Diego State University 3r2 (12- 15, 15-12, 15-13, ^-16, 15-8) for its second victorious Monday in a row. The Bulldogs fought hard and broke several records to top off a successful evening and improved their record to 9- 17 overall and 3-10 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. Three team' records for a match were broken with 96 kills, 89 assists and 40 block assists. Setter Traci Sliester shattered her own assists record of 70 with a new mark of 77 and middle blocker Mary Magyar broke the match record for block assists with 11. With outstanding defensive play, middle blocker Lynette Wilke broke the season record for block assists with 97 which was previously held by Kellie Dyer in 1984 with 93. "The combination of being at home and playing our guts out is what enabled us to win tonight," said Head 'Coach Leilani Overstreet. Game one was tight from beginning to end and .saw outstanding play by outside hitter Jenni McArtor, who pumped out four kills and middle - blocker Lesli Lopes, who had three kills and two block assists. The Aztecs barely slid by the Bulldogs to clinch the win in game three 15-12. Game two started out similar to the previous one. Fresno State, trailing 6-4, rattled off three consecutive points to go up on San Diego 7-6 at the midpoint of the match. The Atecs stayed close, but the Bulldogs fought them off and triumphed 15-13. McArtor and Lopes continued their powerful play with five and four kills respectively. "The team's was down last year. If the teams doing well, well sell al) the tickets despite all the other factors. The tickets are on sale at the Fresno State Ticket Office for $71.00 and are now available to FSU faculty and staff. The 'Dogs made a miraculous re¬ covery in game three after being down 10-3 at one point in the game. Fresno State scored points four thru six without a response from the Aztecs. San Diego State put a point on the board to increase their lead to 11-6, but Fresno .hen rallied with four consecutive points to close the gap to 11-10. Behind two kills by Michele Simms, the 'Dogs tied the contest at 13-13. Lopes and Magyar* then combined for two straight blocks to give FSU the win. The Bulldogs appeared to put the fourth game — and the 'match — away in the fourth game as they outscored the Aztecs 11-4 to turn a 3-3 tie into a 14-7 lead. San Diego State, however, fought off match point and roared back behind the serve of Jackie Mendez and cut the margin to 14-13. The Bulldogs then hit two balls wide, knocked one into the net and then lost See SPIKERS, page 8 Guard positions concern Spencer a$ women hoopsters prepare for '87-88 By Jon Mataune Sports Editor Filling the guard positions vacated by all-time FSU leading scorer Wendy Martell and fiery Ann Menke-Wilson has been a key concern of Head Coach Bob Spencer during the opening prac¬ tice sessions of the Fresno State women's basketball team. This year's squad is composed of six returnees, which include All-Pacific Coast Athletic Association forward Yvette Roberts, and five freshmen re¬ cruits, and two redshirte. "Our weak spot offensively is the guard position where we lack exper¬ ience," said Spencer, "The position is up for grabs." Among the candidates for work in the open backcourt are 5-fcor-8 senior Leesa Agent, a returnee from the 22-8 1986-87 squad, and Mary Gainey, a 5-foot-8 junior who redshirted lastyear. Others competing for time at the guard positions are sophomore hold¬ overs Kim Eproson and Tracy Coke, and freshmen Chris Pagsurberon, Michelle Bento and Mary's sister, Geri Gainey. \T \ Stalwart Shannon McGee will be missing from the Bulldog front line this year, ahd Spencer may try going with a 'twin tower" lineup that includes both 6- foot-5 senior Laurie Heinrichs and 6- foot-6 sophomore Simone Srubek. "We hops we will be able to play Heinrichs and Srubek at the same time with Roberts at the three (small forward) spot and then have (6-0 senior) Renee Ellis as the backup to Yvette," said Spencer. Progress in the frontcourt has been limited by injuries. Roberts, FSUs lead¬ ing scorer last year has an injured thigh, Heinrichs has been bothered by a knee injury, and Elba is recovering from a knee operation earlier this fall. Newcomers up front include 5-foot-8 freshman Lori Ann Donnell, 6-frot-4 freshman Amy Gassett and 5-foot-8 sophomore Bridgette Simmons, who is sitting out with a fractured fingeri There are a lot of question marks this season and we won't frtow until we've had some good intra-squad scrimmages as to who will be our top contenders for starting roles," said Spencer.
