IF "—Page 8 LETTERS Continued from page 2 ing the ceremony, as well as other types of conduct that could be hazardous or in¬ appropriate. I.would hope that any mea¬ sures developed to deal with the pro¬ blem would fall fnrRhort of "frisking." I believe it is important to point out that commencement is an academic ceremony, conducted by the president and faculty of the university to acknow¬ ledge the completion and mastery of a certain body of knowledge by the stu¬ dents assembled. It is a joyous event to be sure but it is also a serious one honoring scholarly achievement. Many aspects of the program are steeped in centuries-old tradition and pomp. I believe most graduates truly ap¬ preciate this recognition and do not want the misguided antics of a few to detract from the occasion. Most would agree that there is ample opportunity for "more informal" celebration at other points in the day (weekend). Thus I have every confidence that the graduates in May will support and co¬ operate in' the effort to make their commencement a mere meaningful and memorable one. . Wednesday. November 4,1987 Sincerely, William H. Corcoran Dean of Student Affairs *No name? DearEditor, yet they write so poorly that university students can't find their thesis statement. Even sadder is the fact that Tim "King of the one-sentence paragraph" Hur- rianko, the paid editor of the Collegian, would allow such a poorly written article to be printed. It is clear changes are needed at the Collegian office. Now I we have to decide between starting at the bottom or top. My choice is both. Ron Statler Unholy attacks DearEditor, Recently on the "opinion" page we were subjected, once again, to one of those cute commentaries that makes light of God. Kyle Nicholas, Bill Pierce and others, seem determined to set us straight about who's a hypocrite and who's not. The only problem is that the subjects of their scrutiny all seem to fall into the conservative camp. Of note are Ronald Reagan and Pat Robertson. Both of these men, who profess a faith in Christ, are openly influenced by this faith when it comes to certain moral and legal issues — such as abortion and pray¬ er and school. Perhaps in the future, before you or I openly proclaim the-"gospel," let's do the following: Take out the Bible, open it, and read it Let's not make ''Christians" what we think they should be, but rather what God says they should be. In any case, the following scripture, offers a good word of advice to those of us who feel compelled to always speak our mind. Stu¬ dents who are interested can find^wt more by contacting Professor Van der Elst, head of the Anthropology depart¬ ment here at CSUF. David Winslow Rubes® By Leigh Rubin l>ar Editor, I have, recently applied for what I think is a tremendous program that is being offered to students here at CSUF only every couple of ^ears. The pro¬ gram, known as China -Semester, in¬ volves students attending Hangzhou University in Hangzhou, China. The students will be traveling around China for two weeks and/may be given the sincere. But is his walk so spotless, so pure, that you find no discrepancies? Or take Sen. Kennedy. Although a profes¬ sing Catholic, his stand on abortion is definitely not that of the Catholic Church. Where are your shouts of "hy¬ pocrite"? It seems apparent to me that you have no interest in the truths of Christianity and who's following them — but only in promoting those public figures who share your own particular beliefs — be¬ liefs that may or may not have anything to do with Christianity. In a quite unholy fashion, you not only attack, rather one- sidedly, public figures, but you also also provide 200 Chinese dollars per month which'is a substantial amount to live on in China. , Unfortunately, only five people have signed up for this program.
