Keats Campus Building. California State University. Fresno, Fresno, CA 93740. Letters must be signed and have the author's name, telephone number and address. / Boost awaited DearEdil am writing inxegards to the campus radio station, KFSR. As I recall. The Dairy Collegian printed an article about a month ago saying the radio station had been given permission by the Federal Com¬ munications Commission to boost their power substantially. This increase in power would greatly help the station reach a more varied population. With the only progressive format in Fresno, KFSR would not have to fight for lisiencrship. If somebody wants to listen to a progressive station. KFSR would be their only choice. '- •While on a recent trip to San Diego, I found that the most popular station in the area, 9IX, was solely a progressive station. The popularity 91X has is sure to give them numerous advertising accounts. I am aware KFSR is a non-profit station; however, with this power boost, KFSR could surely draw more supporters. This, in _l%Ea could give the amateur DJ"s a little ^~ more experience. KFSR is also an excellent place to showcase local musical groups. These groups would rarely, if ever, receive any air time on the more popular local stations. But since KFSR is not worried about making money, they take chances and play the type df music which isn't all Top 40 material When KFSR plays these local bands such as Let's Go Bowling and Society Blue, they enhance their image along with these up-and-coming groups. I really enjoy having a radio station that plays-she type of music KFSR plays. Not only does it give an escape from the repetitive formats of almost every radio station in town, but it is also refreshing to listen to « few songs with some meaning. If the station has been given the OK by the FCC to boost power, why don't they do it? Every day I drive, home from school. I dread the moment when the static coming over the speakers is more prominent than The Cure. Please hurry and elevate this power!! Sincerely, JoelS. Damir Respect asked Dear Editor. Being involved in politics since in high school I have met and have enjoyed cordial relationships with a number of people with political and religious philosophies different than mine. These "relationships" require a maturity and a sense of etiquette on the part of both parties. They require the ability of one to respect the integrity and sincerity of one's political opponent. On Saturday, May 2, Junko Kunitake, president of the campus Latin American Support Committee, came on behalf of the Chris. Petersen city council campaign "committee to my residence. I was not home at the time. Junko spoke to my mother, asking her for whom she was going to vote. My mother answered that she was intending to vote for Chris Petersen's opponent, Rom Garabedian, be¬ cause I. (her son) had asked her to. Junko and my mother engaged in a discussion, during which Junko said that I was trying to "brainwash" my mother, that I ques¬ tioned the sincerity ' of my avowal of Christianity since I took different posi¬ tions on Latin American issues than she. Junko said all of these things to my mother, impugning my character, while I was not even there to defend my¬ self! Needless to say, I am deeply hurt. Before this incident, I thought that, if not a friendship, Junko and I at least enjoyed a cordiality which should befit the social relationships of a young lady and gentle¬ man. But when she would go to my mother and knowingly and willingly denigrate me in front of my mother that, in effect, was less than sincere in the advice I give my mother. Well, that is something I cannot excuse because of "politics." Even though this may not mean much to her, I wish to publicly censure and disassociate myself from Junko Kunitake. I believe she has shown the ugly side of politics which puts political ideology above honor and good personal relationships. / Most sincerely, J. Paul Lujan LoBaugh correct Dear Editor. • - This letter is in response to those criticizing Dawn LoBaugh for blocking "Some Band" from performing a contro¬ versial anti-gay and anti-(pro)choice song. John Relph. Ed Melikian and Jeff Btotnov have attacked Dawn LoBaugh for cancelling the mentioned song. She was quite correct to do so. Here is why. Understand that John Relph began his letter by setting himself above the rest of the student body asking, "What about those who choose to hold a different mor¬ ality than that of the IMMORAL NORM?" Relph begins his complaints with a clear and laughable bigotry — the kind of thing be would have Collegian readers believe he is acting against. He wanted a group called "Some Band" to perform at Air Guitar last Saturday night The song's lyrics are a slap in the face to gays and pro-choice advocates. The important distinction between this year's (rejected) song and. last year's (accepted) song is that last year's was FOR some¬ thing (God) and not AGAINST someone (CSUF gays). All three cry. "CENSORSHIP." This is not censorship. It is responsible select¬ ivity on the part of Dawn LoBaugh and committee. A conscientious minister would not allow a splashy dance number to become part of his religious services. While he may not be opposed to such dances, he recognizes that they are not appropriate in a church service. Likewise, Dawn cannot allow a sermon put to music to spoil a flashy production — particularly when the group's members set. out to insult. It tends to scrape the nerves when, in the middle of a party, one tells another that he is going to Hell. John Relph claims that Christians are "pushed out" when they try to speak their minds on campus. We all know that the Free Speech Area is encamped - daily by Christian ministers who shout, insult and call for us to change our lifestyles. We tolerate this all year long. If a people want to hear more, they can join the IntcTvarsity Christian Fellowship in a private anti-gay sing-along if that makes them feel better. Or they can pick up some Strypcr tickets. '• Religion on our campus says more than its share. Dorm dances at this university have been re-named because Housing de¬ cided that the themes were "un-Christian." John asks in the midst of all this Christian recruiting. "Just who is pushing their morality on whom?" Gee whiz, John. I guess I'd have to tally up all the times a preacher held up his Bible and said something bad about gays, and compare that number with all the times a gay man held up a copy of The Advocate arid told BLOOM COUNTY by Berke Breathed straights to rum away from their hetero¬ sexual ways. You were all wrong for even proposing such a song and Dawn was luckily sharp enough and brave enough to stop you. Your campaign against the gay minority will, in years to come, be recalled with the same disgust and disbelief that past anti- minority persecutions are met with today. You believe in your hearts that gays are wrong, but you cannot prove it. You feel deeply that gays are inferior, but you cannot substantiate this. These are the same ways of thinking that keep die KKK and the Nazis alive. It is the kind of thinking that begins young. Training to believe such illogical and ugly garbage necessarily begins young. A person needs to insulate himself from those different from him, actively punishing those they despise to keep hatreV. alive. These are some of the bad functions that IVCF and other groups serve on CSUFs campus. Finally, Jeff Brotnov said something that really disturbed me. He said that gays are, as John has already said in error, pushing their lifestyles off on us. We've already talked about that Jeff, however, pushed it further, and says that gays are pushing off THEIR disease onto us. AIDS, Jeff, is not a gay disease. Worldwide, a vast number of heterosexuals have the deadly virus, and in Africa, the most afflicted area, it is quite positively a hetcroscxually-transmitted disease, by and_ large. The old farts in Washington D.C. who feel the same unjustified hatred for gays are responsible for the current disaster we are now facing — an AIDS epidemic by limiting much-needed research funding. When scores of young gay men stricken by the disease were dying in our big cities, we all sat passively as we watched fellow humans rot. And we laughed. The faggots had sprung a leak in their end of the boat and nobody cared. Nobody realized it was the same boat we all sail in. If you can't see the folly of letting your fellow humans down, if you cannot see the danger of dis¬ regarding the pains of others different from you, then you hate the compassion of a death-camp guard. You are no better • than the rest of us. You never have been. )Vhen Jeff Brotnov and John Relph and Ed Melikian stop viewing non-Christians and gays as animals to be rc-trained or souls to be saved, and begin to recognize them as people with human integrity, then the "REVIVAL" John Relph speaks of will have finally taken place. There is no other revival at hand. There is no one to lead us Do not wait for the Last Judgment. It takes place every day. —Albert Camus The Fall Sincerely.
