• . =Friday, May 1,1967- Page 10 ,,-•- "'"" ' Sports Do-or-die time for FSU netters By Steve Ruffonl SportsWriter Both the Fresno Suae men's arid women's tennis teams will take to the court this weekend in search of a PCAA tide. The men's team will be competing today thru Sunday in Las Vegas. Led by junior Jean LeClerq, the Bulldogs have amassed a 18-9 dual match record, which tied a school record for most wins m a season. LeClerq, the Bulldogs No.l seed from Revallois Penel, France, set an FSU record for wins in a season, as he posted a 28-10 mark. Ranked No.58 in the nation. LeClerq reached the semi-finals in the powerful Ojai Tournament last weekend, before losing to No.56 Miles Walker of Chapman College, 7-6 7-5. LeClerq will be a definite threat to capture the PC AA championship. Another possible threat for the Dogs could be senior John Soto, who has enjoyed his finest year as Bulldog, with a 19-14 season record. Soto will competing for the No.2 smgles championship. This season, the only two league losses FSU received were at the hands of Long Beach State and UC Irvine. The Bulldogs will be trying to better last year's third place finish at the championships, which was the best in the school's history. rWthe women, most of the spotlight will be cast on the Bulldogs' No.l seed Julie Frasicr. A junior from Santa Monica, Frasier has powered her way to a 17-9 record as the women's No.l seed. She had a six match win streak destroyed at Ojai when she lost to the eventual champion, Kristi Kern of the University of the Pacific. "Julie was unlucky to play Kern when she did. Kern was just phenomenal at the tournament. I thought going into the tournament that Julie could win it all, but it was just bad luck she faced Kern at that time," said head women's coach Cynthia Doemer. Frasier, the current holder of the women's marks for victories fat a season (17). and victories in a career (29-16), has the third best winning percentage at the No.l singles slot in the PQAA with a .546 clip, and should be the Bulldogs major threat to win a championship. For the season, the Bulldogs are 9-13-1 overall, and 2-5 in the PCAA. but first year coach Doemer feels the team is going into the championships with a positive attitude. "We are going in with a very postive attitude. I think we can do well. I would be pleased with a seventh-place finish. We have a very strong league this year," Doemer said. Besides Frasier. Doemer is also looking for No.4 seed Tara Eden to perform well. Eden, a freshman from Placerville, holds a 9-16 record this season, which set a new record for wins in a season by a freshman. "Julie and Tara could both have good tournaments. Both have been playing well lately, and have had a good showing against against leagae competition," Doemer said. SOFTBALL Continued from page 9 Parrent's single in the thfad opened the doors to FSU's first three runs, as a batter later Parrent dashed all the way around to score on a Mayer double to the gap in left. An out later, Rolen was hit by a pitch, then both Mayer and Rolen scored when the SDSU first baseman botched a Strang grounder and hurled it past her third baseman's head. Parrent also started the fireworks in the fifth, pounding a single to right Mayer followed with a single and both runners advanced on Nof fsinger's sacrifice bunt. An out later. Strang tallied RBIs 26 and 27. lacing a single to center field. Julie Glass suffered the loss to fall to 5-3. giving up six Bulldog huts and three earned runs in seven innings of work. The 'Dogs continue their homestand with a double-header this afternoon against the Aztecs, then play their crucial PCAA bout with the No. 1 Titans from Fullerton State on Saturday with the first game of the twinbill beginning at 1 p.m. GRIDDERS Continued from page 9 That 21-20 lead held right up until the end of the contest. Belli missed a chance to win it when a short field goal sailed left of the goalpost and it appeared the Whites had a win. But, on third down with 1:57 left to play, Telford fumbled the pigskin away trying to escape from pressure. Courtney Griffin rushed on the next five plays. It took him three tries to get a first down; and then on first-and-goal from the five. he chugged to the one yard line. Griffin crawled over the goal line on the next play to give his team the lead. Skipper, running right on a sweep, lofted a pass that James Williams pulled in for a two- point conversion and 28-21 lead. Tt was the time that we put everything together that we had learned during spring practice," defensive end Jethro Franklin said. "We had a great recruiting year on defense and we're going to be good." GOLFERS Continued from page 9 freshman Ron Ewing have also contributed to the success. The Bulldogs face their toughest challenge this weekend before taking part in the NCAA Tournament June 10-13. FSU's only other tourney before nationals will be the PCAAs, in which they will be the heavy favorite. Last season, the 'Dogs finished fourth in the ASU Sun Devil Phoenix Thunderbird Tournament. RYU won it, and Arizona State finished second. In the 1986 individual competition, David < Si/hcrland placed third, while Kevin Sutherland and Loustalot tied for 13th. "Every time we tee it up, we know that we can win," Watney said. "But, we can just as easily place sixth, eight or 10th in the tough tourneys. "It's hard to play at the top of you're game all the time. But generally, so far we have done that this year," he added. Far and away the best.
