; Wednesday. April 1,1987—=*= Page 3 PSYCHOs on loose CSUF club into intramural sports By Carlos Castillo Staff Writer There are 102 confirmed PSYCHOs roam¬ ing around the CSUF campus. PSYCHO is an acronym for Promising Students Yearning to Compete for Honor ~^~^ja/A Opportunity. The PSYCHOs are a group of students who socialize together through various activities such as intramurals, camping trips, picnics, and parties, according to head PSYCHO Joe Hamilton. Hamilton serves as the president of the club he founded last fall The club was originally a group of students Hamilton got to know while serving as a resident adviser. The dorm floor Hamilton supervised became known as the Sequoia PSYCHOs and they organized an intramural football "We're basically a social club and our main emphasis is intramural sports." —Joe Hamilton Hamilton said he wanted to organize a club from his dorm nucleus, but his duties as a resident adviser took too much of his time. But Hamilton finally got the project off the ground at the beginning of last fall semester. '1 got some people together who were original PSYCHOs. We talked about it and decided to form a club," said Hamilton. Hamilton makes no false pretenses about the activities of the PSYCHOs. "We're basically a social club and our main emphasis is intramural sports." There arc equal numbefs~of males and females represented in the PSYCHOs. according to Hamilton. But he added that dues for males are S10 more. "Next year we're probably gonna even that out," said Hamilton. Even though the activities of the PSYCHOs are similar to fraternities and sororities, Hamilton said there is one clear distinction. "We don't have any initiation. I consider it an organized group of friends," s .d Hamilton. "If someone has a friend who wants to join or somebody comes up to me and wants to join, there's no real limitation," said Hamilton. Hamilton said some of the members of the PSYCHOs are anti-fraternity, but he added that the club as a whole is not against fraternities and said the PSYCHOs have members who are affiliated with fraternities and sororities. Tfs an open organization for anyone who wants to join," said Hamilton. Hamilton said the PSYCHOs recently asked the Finance and Budget Committee for some money but their request was denied. He appealed Tuesday to the AS. Senate to reconsider the funding request, but the senate again denied their request Administrative Vice President John Love, a member of the F and B Committee, said PSYCHOs were turned down for funding because, their club is a purely social club and the inoney would only benefit the people in the/club. fc The PSYCHOs submitted a SI. 125 funding request to the F and B Committee, according to Love. Love said even though fraternities and sororities are social clubs, they also participate in philanthropic projects which benefit die campus and the community. "There is a misunderstanding about the Greek system that it is just social, and it's just not true." said Love. Love said the Intra Fraternity Council is planning to sponsor a program on AIDS and this type of event benefits more students.
