She was a gray- haired lady and she told me that their family needed him to finish school because of economic problems. I bought it. I found out later he (the student-athlete) had payed her!" Is EmanuEl's Drama 62 too easy? "I don't think so at all. No, I think it appears to be easy because education is going on in a bored or fail I could flunk half of the students on a curve but what would be achieved? Ninety percent of teaching is keeping their attention. I like the students the most It's nice to be working with people who are trying to accomplish dungs." EmanuEl took offense to a column last spring in the weekly student paper, Insight. A columnist called his Drama 62 class 'a whore'. EmanuEl took it personally. 'That really bothered me because there are other 62 teachers. He compared me to a whore. I didn't like that at all. It was a cheap shot. It bothered me that the journalism advisers didn't catch it." In "As You Like It," William Shakespeare writes "All the world's a stage. And all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts." EmanuEl has played many parts. He worked for Quinn Martin Productions as an actor and writer on such notorius shows as "The Invaders" and The FJ3.I." A reviewer once said EmanuEl should not be allowed in a theater unless he buys a ticket With that kind of encouragement, EmanuEl turned his • concentration toward directing. He has directed several plays at CSUF and even taken some of them abroad. In 1976, EmanuEl's play. The Liberty Dance of Henry Sparrow" was performed by CSUF students at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Art in Washington DC. The play won the Laureate Award, for the best show in the festival. EmanuEl has gone to Washington D.C. twice. He directed The Taming of the Shrew" there in 1984. He has taken several plays to Edinburgh. Scotland for the annual play festival and received international acclaim both for himself and CSUF. He doesn't believe the notion that Shakespeare must be done in tights. He has staged plays where die characters are dressed in punk rock fashion. One of his wildest times as a director was one night at San Jose State. "I did a Greek play that caused a riot. It was in the late '60s. It caused a riot because it was interpreted as being anti-war. At the end of the play, this Greek soldier said of war It is immoral, I won't go.' Some of the students in the audience were going to be shipped off to Vietnam the next day. They went nuts and started yelling We won't go" and kicking over chairs. The national guard was on campus and they came in. I got smacked c\n the head You shouldn't hit Vets. I got arrested for inciting a riot. The charges were d ' 5. L.
