Thc California Institute for Pan-African Studies (CIPAS) is bringing reggae to Fresno Saturday. CI PAS is a non-profit organization composed of CSUF alumni. Member Sakura Konc. a disc-jockey on FM stations KSJ V and K N PO. said the concert tomor¬ row will promote culture in Fresno. "Culture in Fresno isn't there." said Kone. Kone. and KFSR disc-jockey Bill Har¬ vey collaborated to bring local band Let's Go Bowling and thc "rootsey. indigenous sound"of Rankin'Scrooand Sister Ginger together in concert. Harvey, a CSUF music major and manager of let's Go Bowling said this is the first major reggae show in l-resno in two years. He described his band's sound as "a cross between The English Beat and The Monkees." He called Rankin" Scroo "one ol" the best reggae bands in Cali¬ fornia." "Reggae has been an underground sound supportive of the black culture." Harvey said. Kone agreed. saying"Reggac has thc same themes as popular music, yet it goes beyond that into real-life experiences., lyrics may tell of what it's like to work on a job you don't like. "Reggae today is left of the dial. It is relegated to public and college radio sta¬ tions." Kone said. "UB40. Fine Young Cannibals. Ihe Blow Monkees and'even General Public- have helped bring reggae back. Jimmy Cliff won a Grammy Award this past year." Harvey said. "Reggae is coming out of the underground." The I band plays danceable cover tunes from the Colour Field favorites "Shout" and "l.o*iie. Louie"that pack highschooldance floors. Nicholson said. Harvey said that Let's Go Bowling has a lot of potential in Fresno because they play for enjoyment, not money. Rankin' Scroo and Sister Ginger will play selections from their album Thanks anil Praises which has had success on college radio stations. Harvey said some earlier reggae shows at the Wild Blue night club seemed forced. Rankin'Scroo's appeal is in his sincerity. Harvey said. "His rhythum is great, spiritual, dance- able. His lyrics tell of blacks and all people, past and present." Kone said of Scroo. "His Jamaican hciitage and his band 'Ridim' capture a sensiti\e reggae background." / Neither Kone nor Harvey expect to see maior reggae acts like Jimmy Clifl or Steel Pulse in Fresno soon. Kone said CIPAS is doing all they can to promote "Let's Go Bowjing" because thev have some fine talent.
