Ijxne Turner I The Daily Collegian As the late afternoon sun fell in Bulldog Stadium creating a field covered by shadows, the clock wound down finishing the second overtime of play with the Fresno State and the California soccer teams tied 0-0. It appeared the two teams had fought to a deadlock until Tom Gleason electrified t*»e 2,846 fans with u goal off an assist by Femi Olukanni, giving thc Bulldogs a 1-0 victory over the Bears. Gleason's 10-yard header just beyond the reach of goalie Todd Harmon came with 10 seconds left to play and led to a Bulldog celebration. The California players fell to the ground in disbelief of the game-winning kick. A victory was needed against the Bears to keep FSU's post-season hopes alive. The 'Dogs entered the weekend with a chance at the Pacific Coast Athletic Association title, but ,the CSU-Fullerton win over Nevada-Las Vegas on Friday ended the Bulldogs' hopes for a league championship. With thc NCAA crown, the Titans earned an automatic berth in the NCAA post-season champion tournament. So. in order for Frenso State to get a bid. the 'Dogs have to finish the season strong. Yesterday's win raised FSU's season record to 13-4-2 (4-1 in the PCAA and 4-1 -I in the Pacific Soccer Conference). Cal's playoff chances are now slim as the Bears drop to 13-4-2 and 1-2-1 in the PSC. Despite the lack of scoring, it was an intense gan?e filled with excitement. The Bulldogs controlled play for most of the afternoon, getting numerous scoring opportunities. "We were around the goal all afternoon," said Bulldog Coach Jose Elgorriaga. "We created all kinds of chances by moving the ball well, but we couldn't get one in the net." Fresno State totalled 10 shots on goal, while the Bears could only manage three attempts. Bulldog goalie Mark Daugherty recorded just one save, but played well throughout the game. For the game, Harmon was tested time after time by the Bulldog offense and made some sensational saves. In the first half. Olukanni centered a couple of passes perfectly only to have them denied by a stingy Bear defense. Dan Dutra had a breakaway Chance for a goal, but Harmon was there to make the play. With 35:30 left in the game, Harmon made his most impressive save of the day. A 'Dog center kick gave them a chance for a header, that was shot to the left corner of the goal. Harmon dove, and deflected the shot just wide \>f the net. The Bulldogs tried three more shots before regulation ended, but Harmon continued his excellence and his shut¬ out When Olukanni's kick bounced off a Bear player's hand in the first overtime period, the Bulldogs were in business again.
