The four-year-old quarter horse mare has been the subject of repeated attempts by Thomas to surgically repair its damaged reproductive system. A section of the horse's birth canal and rectum was damaged giving birth when the foal's 'hooves tore a four-to-live inch section of tissue, rendering ,the horse useless as a broodmare. Lspecial Mahogany was donated to the CSUF horse unit by comedian Red Skelton's wife last semester. Thomas has tried to repair thc damage three times with little success. Of the ^damaged tissue, only an inch has healed. /the result of the initial surgery, Thomas said. According to Thomas, the primary rea¬ son for the lack of success is the location of fhe damage. The rectal-vaginal area is a high-stress, high-contamination area. Be¬ cause of constant stress on Hioc recon¬ structed tissues, the sutures were torVi out. mining hours of tedious labor t>y Thomas. "It's getting kind of discouraging."Thom- as said after the third operation failed. A low success rate is common in birth canal and rectum injuries, he said. Thomas said he hopes the mare can be added to CSUF's quarter-horse breeding program, but thafsuccessful surgery will require different methods. The broodmare has "still got the poten¬ tial there for complete repair." Thomas said. c The surgery is a two-stage operation. In the first stage, the damaged membranous tissues lining both the rectum and the birth canal are reconstructed. The second stage, which is dependent on a successful first stage, involves reconstruction of the vulva and anus, which were also damaged in the delivery. Thomas said. If further surgery fails, the mare can be used as riding horse since it has already had some basic training. Thomas said. According to Dr. Anne Rodiek. an instructor in the horse department, the Skelton's would be interested in getting the mare back if CSU F's breeding program cannot use it.
