• gp&j?B . Friday, Oct. 3,1986 m m FSU's hands full with Spartans By Mike Butwell Sports Editor By pitting his squad against Pac-IO opponents the first four weeks of the season. San Jose State Coach Claude Gilbert felt he would have a good team if it could survive the first four games. The Spartans survived. By splitting with the larger Pac-IO teams. SJSU (2-2) enters Saturday's 1:30 p.m. game at Spartan Stadium eagerly awaiting their biggest challenge yet: ousting the No. 19 Bulldogs(3-0). San Jose is riding high after last week¬ end's 35-14 whippping of the Cal Bears. "One of largest hurdles to be placed in front of us will be the tremendously improved San Jose State team."said FSU coach Jim Sweeney. "They have improved themselves in every area: offensively, de¬ fensively and the kicking game. "They have played four Pac-10 teams and won two and could have won three with the exception being Stanford, which was relatively even." The afternoon confrontation at San Jose is projected to break the Spartan Stadium record of 23.500 set back in 1971. The Spartans, who tallied 575 yards in total offense against Cal, is paced by junior quarterback Mike Perez. Perez has already thrown for 1207 yards, including a 348-yard day last weekend. SJSU also sports an evenly balanced breed of running and receiving threats. In the receiving corps, senior Lafo Malauulu has caught 26 passes for 334 yards, while Guy Liggins already has registered two 100-yard receiving outings and 331 total receiving yards. On the ground, the Spar¬ tans are led by junior tailback Kenny Jackson. Jackson has run for 330 yards this year, a touchdown and averages 3.6 yards a carry: FSU's Kevin Sweeney goerf into the contest needing just 15 yards to pass Iowa's Chuck-Long, the No. 6 all-time leading passer. If Sweeney throws for 155 yards he would jump to No. 5 on the all- time list, passing John Elway of Stanford, while No. 4 Jim McMahon of BYU is 341 yards ahead of Sweeney. Sweeney cur¬ rently has 9.195 throwing yards and 8.933 total offensive yardage. For the year. Sweeney is fourth in total offense yards (286) and 12th in passing efficiency (151.6). Barry Belli is only seven points from- moving in second place on the career school scoring record. Belli has 190 points. GRAYSON Continued from page 6 Grayson was more than ready to switch to Bulldog football. "The year was 1982 when FSU won the Cal Bowl. I was •impressed with the atmosphere here and the coaches were very honest and straight¬ forward. The facilities were nice and the fan support temendous. It's a big difference between playing before 500 people (at Pomona) and 35.000 people." Football is in the blood of the Grayson family, as his dad, also Dave Grayson, played free safety for the Oakland Raiders throughout his 10-year career. However, it was young Dave's choice to play loot ball. "My parents supported me in whatever I wanted to do. My dad was "always there for me, but he let my coaches teach me the game." "They like to see me play. They come to the games and have a good time. It's a six hour drive-f rom San Diego, but they enjoy the crowd and the football." Will the younger Dave Grayson follow his father's footsteps into the National Football League? "I have dreams about playing in the NFL. Hopefully I'll get a shot. I'd have to have a real good season, stay healthy and the rest will take care of itself." The football program at FSU has grown into one of the best in thc West. When Grayson came here, he had no idea that he would bea part of such a growing program "A national ranking seemed so far off at first. As the years went by it became more of a reality. I'm just glad to bea part of it. I 'II be able to say that I was a part of it. just like the people here before me who helped build Bulldog Stadium. Maybe I'll be able to say that 1 helped expand the complex." CLIFF Continued from page 6 and do a great job. There has been fast maturity from the whole team, especially the new starters." , Like his fellow teammates. Hannemann is aware that Fresno State will be facing a task in'a half Saturday at San Jose. "They have all seniors on the offensive line." said Hannemann. "We must shut¬ down their run and make them throw." Hannemann plans on taking a stab at the National Football League, but .is real¬ istic about his chances. "I have as good a shot as anybody. I just want the qpport- tunity to be given the chance." The shoe fit Cjndcralla, and with a little bit of luck and lots of hard work. NFL cleats could fit very nicely on Cliff Han- nemarfn.
