>jp®Erfo .Tu«»day, Sept. IS, 1986. page i Runners have strong outing at Invatational Ru MtlrA Rutuiall . By Mike Butwell Sports Editor* Up in Rockilin Saturday aMhe Hornet Invitational, the Fresno State men and women's cross country teams turned in impressive showings. The women dashed to a first place finish by a very moderate margin in their three mile competition. FSU recorded 29 points cbmprared to the 2nd place Aggie running club from Davis, which racked up 84 points (the winner being the squad with the lowest point total). Pacing the Bulldogs was 2nd place finisher Stacey McAfee with a time of 17:18. Otnerhigh finishers include Janine Ogas (4th). Kelly Buzza (5th) and Mary Kuphaldt (7th). McAfee's time was the second best in Fresno State history. Over on the men's side. FSU ran to a 2nd place finish with 84 points behind Boise State, who won the five-mile meet with 57 points. Head Coach Tom Pagani was impressed with the togetherness of the squad, as FSU's top 12 runners finished within one minute and 14 seconds apart. John King was Fresno State's top finisher at 10th place with a time of 25:57, while Jim Hardimon came in 11th and Neff McGhie placed 14th. - ; Both cross country teams will compete in their only regular season home meet this Saturday in the Fresno State Invita¬ tional starting at 10 a.m. Besides the Bulldogs, the meet will also feature UCLA. Arizona and possibly USC. Bulldogs ranked 24th The FSU "football team got its first nationaLjreognition Sunday when the Cable News Network— USA Today spotted them No. 24 in their weekly top 25 poll. FSU finished right behind Tennessee and just ahead of USC. Oklahoma finished atop the poll. BARK Continued from page ft minutes to go over and wait in the just- as-long Thunder Mountain line instead. With no alternative but to whirl back on to the 101 West, we zoomed off hot and fuming like we'd just drank a gal¬ lon of hot salsa. After waiting in yet another freeway turn-off, then waiting at the gate to get into the Rose Bowl parking lot, Ave settled into a cozy parking lot on the green. Yes the greeaf of a 18-hole golf course...and you'll never guess the number of the hole on the nearest flag pole we sighted. You got it, 18. The two-mile hike.to the actual Rose Bowl, although tiring and agonizing, did have its moments. Watching the patriotic alumhis "pig" out on their glamorous buffett-like picnics at least built up our appetite (we ate our sand¬ wiches about two hours earlier while our car waited to advance a couple of inches). Also, there's nothing like dodging nerf footballs thrown by tikes half my size, and filthy slang twice their size. Finally we made it to the stadium (hip, hip, hooray). Sure, we still found ourselves climbing up 50 something rows up, where we could see to the detail lightbulbs of the scoreboard, but like Dorothy ofihe" Wizard of Oz" we had survived the journey (barely). I know, this is Fresno not Pasadena. And 1 know we still play in Bulldog Stadium not the 70,000 plus capacity of the Rose Bowl, but I do see the simil¬ arities in the two bonanzas. If Fresno Football were a movie, they'd now be the top box office smash hit for a second straight' week. By breaking the attendance record two consecutive times, it's just a matter of time before Red Wave fever gets big. Real big. When this big transition occurs is unknown, but whenever, it's good for the university, the city and for every¬ body involved. All 1 know is everytime 1 stroll the short 20 yards from my pad to Bulldog Stadium, I enjoy the pleasant walk and just sort of chuckle when I think back at that vigorous October Saturday when more time was spent seeking the destined field of play than actually viewing what occurred on it. Don't start panicking though, be- cause'it's going to take more than Cali¬ fornia Bowls to get Bulldog mania as jam-packed and as wild 'n crazy as my adventure. Or is it.
