Telephone: (209) 278-5733 Sports THE DAILY COLLEGIAN Tuesday, December.2,1997 % / Rest Continued from page 8. The question now is whether or not the Bulldogs (3-1) can rebound both from the loss of Hcrren as well as their first loss of the season to unranked Arkansas. "Guys just have to step up know¬ ing that we are missing one of our best players," said point guard Rafer Alston. "We know that Chris is going to be back, and we just have to win for him until he does." The Bulldogs will use this we^k of practice to try and reshape the rotation that was finally coming together with the return of Alston and forward Daymond Forney. Willie Farley did a more than admirable job in Herrcn's place against Arkansas, hitting on 3>-of-6 three-point attempts and scoring 17 points, and will start at the shoot¬ ing guard position until Herren re¬ turns. "The team is just going to be there for Chris during this whole thing and support him," said fresh¬ man Demetrius Porter, whose min¬ utes increasled significantly with¬ out Herren in the mix. "We know that he is going to make it." The brightest spot for the Bull¬ dogs in the loss to Arkansas was the play of center Avondre Jones. The transfer from USC had career highs with 23 points and 14 rebounds as well as blocking three shots. The biggest single area of im¬ provement so far over last season is definitely on the boards. Last year poor rebounding was the main rea¬ son that Fresno State never really lived up to expectations, but that has not been a problem yet this sea¬ son. Evidence of the turnaround came in the Arkansas game where Jones and Tremaine Fowlkes both grabbed 14 rebounds and helped Fresno State to a 45-37 reboundiog edge. Jones had seven offensive rebounds alone. The Bulldogs will need every one of those rebounds once they end the week of uninterrupted prac¬ tice. The team's next four games are all against teams that went to die NCAA tournament last season. First up is a game against Temple at the new Apollo arena next Tuesday. Then the team-trav¬ els to Pacific, comes home to face St. Mary's and then travels to Min¬ nesota on Dec. 20. According to Herren's timetable, he could return in time for the Min¬ nesota game if all dungs go well. That is also the game that Winfred Walton is expected to make his de¬ but - in front of a large crowd of friends and family who will make the trip from Walton's hometown of Detroit to see him play. Walton's status has been ques¬ tioned recently by KMJ radio re¬ ports, and to a degree by Tarkanian, but it appears that Walton's absence from is nothing to be alarmed about, mm opens SERVICES AVAILABLE r- Mail drop 'Postage stamps -Packaging boxes Money orders Express mail Priority mail International mail Certified and registered nrjail Pleas call for more Hours M-F 9 a.m. 6 University Student Union Pa> Kennel Bookstore Honiiay Open Mouse & ^Discounts ft cD/iau/(hgs ft ^iti^es L/Music o L^utko/i u4utog*af>htiig cT/tee Qtjt ^Mapping & Qkldaq, ^ecembe* 5 ft 7:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Satundag, ^Decemben 6 ft 10:00 a.m. 1o 3:00 p.m. Amnion Autouh*phinu The Valley's Legends & Legacies, Volumes I & II December 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 278-4062 ft FRESNO STATE £? t> ^m* L=S J\ 1 Jr 1 M LJ AD LINE 278-5731 ANNOUNCEMENT Rich Republican Leader, God and Mike Eaales, CEO.
