Timeout THE DAILY COLLEGIAN Thursday, December 4,1997 Playstation college football game plays with the numbers By David Childers The Daily Collegian You arc sitting at home the week hefore finals. You have several pa¬ pers due. areStruggling to maintain a somewhat rcspectahlc grade point average, and you seem to have ahout half as much time as you need to get your school work done. So. obviously, there is only one thing that you can do. You grab youry Sony Playstation and decide you want to sec if you can recreate the 1W7 Fresno State football season and guide the Bulldogs to the na¬ tional championship. As if that task was not already difficult enough, the makers of "NCAA Gamcbrcaker 98" seem to have slacked the deck against you. You look for quarterback Bill Volck and find jersey number one in his place. Jermaine Brooks? How arc you going to win with a wide receiver playing quarterback? Well, you always have the ever- dependable Michael Pittman at run¬ ning back, right? Wrong. Your start¬ ing halfback is number 22 - Corey Fields - another wide receiver. Gone too is your sure-handed fullback Jamie Kimbrough. He has been replaced by - hold your stom¬ ach now - the starting punter Jeff RoberB>x <~^ ' Courtesy Photo Nebraska quarterback Scott Frost scans the field looking for star running back Ahmad Green, sort of. Before we get any more out of hand, let's clear up a little embel¬ lishment of the truth. From all in¬ dications, the players are really in their right positions. Number 22 runs like Pittman. not like a wide receiver. Number one throws and moves like Volek. not Brooks. And your fullback certainly does not perform like a punter. But the problem is realism. "Gamcbreaker" did not hit the stores until very recently, with the season all but finished, and you would expect that the game would be more accurate than its rival "NCAA College Football 98" from EA Sports. But that obviously is not the case. The problem could b« that "Gamcbreaker" simply cHose to pay less attention to the "smaller" schools and did not do a good job of coming up with the right jersey Please see PLAY, page 5.
