Death
Continued from page 2.
May Ka Lee's death docs not lie
with the riffraff that pulled the trig¬
ger, but with the society that con¬
dones and tolerates their presence.
One reason for this is that the bal¬
ance of gang violence is directed
a*gainst members of our minority
communities - people who are not
politically salient in our communi¬
ties. In many eyes this makes their
lives somehow less valuable than
others. Another more telling reason
for this continuing plague is lhat the
general public lacks *he will to end
the gang problem decisively. When
. the citizens of another country are
threatened, we arc first to jump into
the fray wilh a full-on military
operation. Conversely, when
gang warfare is inflicted upon
our citizens we make but feeble
attempts to stop it.
Whenever I drive by Melody
Park my heart becomes heavy
and tears fill my eyes. Yours
should also. May Ka Lee died
needlessly and our
squcamishness about meeting
force with force caused it. Re¬
member her name and vow to
yourself that she will be the last.
Remember, because it's coming
soon to a park or street corner
near you and your children.

ate student majoring in biology.
