"It's not that I'm against affir¬ mative action. I believe everyone should be given an equal opportu¬ nity to succeed." said Farnsworth "1 just don't believe in quotas." Farnsworth said he belies es the university should reach out to underrepresented groups. But it should not give them advantages over students who have worked just as hard, but do not qualify for ad¬ vantages because of their skin color "I've always been taught that ev¬ eryone was the same, no matter what their color of skin is." Farnsworth said. He said that a bel¬ ter way to solve the problem of minority underrepresentation in college to is improve education in the lower grades. Orti/ agrees thai classroom si/c reforms initiated by Gov Pete Wilson should help solve this problem. Although preferences have a cloudy future. Orti/ said minority students will always face hurdles that other students do not. He said ' he learned about them quickly when he was a student.
