News THEDAILY * COLLEGIAN Monday, August 25,1997 Assault Continued from page 1. Junior Preciado, 23. also a room¬ mate of Boyd's, agreed that some party goers were offended Boyd was talking to a white woman. Preciado. a senior majoring in international business, described members of Kappa Sigma and their associates as "shiesty." "They're the type of people that will say 'hi' to you then talk behind your back,'.' Preciado said. "They were more concerned with the fact that this incident was going to ruin their reputation and that the media was at their house than Malcolm's health."'Preciado said. "1 over heard some of them saying that now they're going to have a bad reputation." Jared Hayton, vice-president of Kappa Sigma fraternity, hoped this incident doesn't affect the fraternity's reputation. Hayton, who was present at the party, said that someone came and got htm and they found Boyd be¬ hind the complex beaten "pretty badly." "It really frightens us. We're scared," said Hayton, who called 9*11. "There could be killers, people that could really hurt people around us. I mean Malcolm was really hurt." "We canceled all our parties. It would be crazy to have another one." said Hayton, 22. "All I want to see is for Malcolm to make it out of this O.K." Hayton denied reports that the attackers were Kappa Sigma mem¬ bers. Bechara agreed. "I know most everybody in Kappa Sigma, these guys were defi¬ nitely not in the fraternity," Bechara said. "They were totally random guys. I don't even think they are students at Fresno State, they didn't act like college students." Although people from both sides deny Kappa Sigma's direct involve¬ ment with the attack, the Fresno Police Department is treating it as a hate crime with members of the fraternity as suspects. "It makes me kind of sick [that the media and law enforcement] are treating.this like a hate crime." Hayton said. "I don't know what would motivate somebody to do something like that." Hayton said people have been driving by the headquarters cursing them since the incident. "It's kind of scary. Mabey some¬ one will get angry and think we were involved," said Hayton, who stated he believed that Kappa Sigma was not responsible for the assault on Boyd. Bechara said he hoped the po¬ lice solve the crime soon. He said the police will find an excellent witness in a woman that tried to step in between Boyd and his attacker. Please see ASSAULT page 8.
