"It js an op¬ portunity for the new emeriti to be introduced to and congratulated bv their colleagues," Rosie Gutierrc/. luncheon coordinator, said The luncheon began with a re¬ ception and lunch prov ided by Uni¬ versity Food Services. A flute duo from the, Fresno State music depart¬ ment entertained approximate!) SO guests The luncheon ended with a pre¬ sentation of plaques and commen¬ tary on each honoree's achieve¬ ments by Melanic Bloom, chair of the Academic Senate. In his address to the emeriti. University President John Welty discussed the contributions made bv faculty, and the many changes lhat the uinycrsity faces "So many ot our emeriti have- pro vided support for our university in so many ways." Welly said. Welly cued examples of contri¬ butions including endowments, scholarships and library collections "There is a culture here with a' commitment to teaching Students understand lhal there is a faculty who cares about them and sets high expectations for them." Welty said "Our fundamental job is leaching and caring aboul students, and we are here to honor those people who have carried thai oul in a variety of ways." 'Emeriti are recommended by their departments based on their years of service and achievements Tlie selection last year of 12 emeriti is average according to Ihe Faculty Personnel Office. Each year there are about 15 emeriti selected.
