The festival includes outdoor activities, exhibits, broadcast presentations and a mem¬ bership drive for the River Parkway Trust. Activities started March 9 and will continue through May31. Most of the activities offered are free or are provided for a small fee. A wide variety of outdoor activities aimed al fun and education are offered during the festival including hiking, canoeing, cycling, and river walks. The River Fair thai ends the festival on May 31 features food, entertainment and horseback riding on the Lewis S. Eaton Trail. The fair is the largest of the Trust's public- events. Some of the community groups partici¬ pating in the 12-week festival include the Fresno Art Museum; the Fresnur Metropoli¬ tan Museum, the Spectrum Gallery, Fresno State Madden Library and the Chaffee Zoo. Museum, library and gallery exhibits high¬ light the San Joaquin River through photog¬ raphy, lectures, displays and art. A multi-media mural displayed at the Fresno Art Museum by the Hansen family winds through three galleries and took three years to complete. The re¬ buke and call for a vote of confidence comes on the heels of two unrelated criminal in¬ vestigations that have re¬ cently hit the* university: an alleged point shav¬ ing scandal involving Fresno State basketball players and a California Department of Justice probe of former Director of Public Safety Willie Shell. Shell announced his retirement March 19 and officials are still in¬ vestigating the point shaving alle¬ gations. A vote of no confidence is the most severe statement that can be made by a faculty, Melanie Bloom, chair of the Academic Senate, said. A no confidence vote would likely trigger yet another investiga¬ tion by the Chancellor's Office of Welty and top administrators, but there would be no guarantee any¬ one would be removed from office. Fresno State sophomore Sara Peterson, con¬ tinues to be an involved and committed stu¬ dent and community member while balanc¬ ing the responsibilities that come wjih her title. Peterson said she had never given the Miss Sara Peterson Clo\ is pageant much thought, until last year, when she attended the 1996 Miss Clovis pag¬ eant. It was there that pag¬ eant board member Norm Andrews, the fa¬ ther of- one of Peterson's close friends, encouraged her lo think about be¬ coming involved in the pageant. "I knew that as Miss Clovis. I would have a significant opportunity to influence and impact the lives oi young people." Peterson said.
