The meet- began last Thursday at the Palo Alto College Natatorium. in San Antonio. Texas. For three days, the Bull¬ dogs w ent up against the best swimmers in the WAC A total o\ 19 pool records. 15 meet records, and nine WAC records were set. For three of the top five teams, this had beeij, their first WAC Championship meet. Southern Methodist Uni¬ versity won the team title with 867 points, as well as many individual awards. In a distant second was Bngham Young University whose team earned 455 points. TheUniversity of Nevada Las Vegas finished third with 411 points. Fresno State placed sixth in a field of 14. v Despite not winning an . event there were a few proud > moments for Fresno State. Sophomore Holly Gravatt took second place in the 200 meter breaststoke And junior Deanna Voudouris took fifth in the 200 meter butterfly, just sec¬ onds out of the top three. In two weeks. Fresno State will send Holly Gravatt to the NCAA Champion¬ ships. She will be competing in the 200 meter brcaststroke. At the NCAA Champion¬ ships, the top conference fin¬ ishers nationwide will be swimming for individual titles. This meet will be the 1996-97 season finale for collegiate women's swim¬ ming and diving. —ByJeffBernsen Lobos defeat Bulldogs in tournament The New Mexico Lady Lobos ►rode the heels of a sparkling sec¬ ond half by junior Abby Garcheck to knock off the Fresno State Bull** dogs. 70-59. in the first round of the women's WAC basketball tourna¬ ment. Behind 21 points from Garcheck. New Mexico improved to 18-9 on the season and set up a quaterfinal showdown with the Pa¬ cific Division champion San Diego Aztecs on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Fresno State ended their season at 14-13. "In the first half I think we came out a little over anxious, maybe even a bit too pumped up," New Tamika Luois shot better, executed better, and made the right adjustments in the second half." Fresno State's penetration and aggresivc defense left the Lady Lo¬ bos in a 34-29 halftime hole after being held to only 37 percent shoot¬ ing in the first half. But foul trouble doomed the Bulldogs in the second half and the Lobo's attack took advantage by reeling off an 11-1 run with 15 min¬ utes left in the second half. Garcheck. who had only six points in the first half, stepped up in the second half with 15 points, while dishing out five assists for the game. New(Mexico took advantage of the hole in the middle left by 6-4 Zanete Law picking up her fourth foul and Lori Brown fouling out. by getting the ball to post players Anita Vuletic and Katie Kern who each scored in double figures, and combined for 20 rebounds. "We tried to calm our girls dow n because we knew they were getting themselves in foul trouble," Fresno State Head Coach Linda Wunder said. "People were going in to help on defense, but then others weren't helping them out." For the game. New Mexico placed four players in double fig¬ ures, as Sonya Bryant added 10 points despite having four fouls. New Mexico bounced back for their fourth win in their last five games. UNM, ranked No. 60 in the nation is off to its best start (10-0 ) under Head Coach Kathy Kolankiewicz. Fresno State ranked, 34th in the nation, lost to Lobos 8- i at the Lobo Tennis Complex last Saturday. The lone victory for Bulldogs came from outstanding sophomore Dora Djilianova who defeated UNM's Ana Friganovic 6-7,6-4,6- 3. Djilianova is ranked No. 25 in the nation. Dora Djilianova was the only Bulldog player to get a victory in the Fresno State match against the hosting Lobos this weekend. ■ Bulldogs top San Diego Toreros in men's tennis The Fresno State men's tennis team defeated the University of San Diego Torreros on Sunday in San Diego. The Bulldogs improved their record to 6-4 this season. The Toreros dropped to 2-5. The Bulldogs were led by Fredrick Giers, who had two wins to add to his total this season. Geirs defeated San Diego's Rikard Roos 7-6. 6-2. Andy Scorteanu beat Ola Lindblom 6-4, 7-5. In fact, with Robert Lindstedt's victory over Rodolfo Rodriguez 6- 4, 6-4, the Bulldogs were able to jump to a 3-0 lead they never sur¬ rendered.
