With a sound conference vic¬ tory. 170-118. against the Spartans of San Jose State, and a non-con¬ ference annihilation. 174-34. of the Loyola Marymount Lions. Fresno State moved to 9-4 overall. They look to take on conference rival UNLV in Irvine next week. After edging out the Rebels last year by just a point, they are not expecting an easy win. The Bulldogs knew they needed to look sharp and perform well against LMU and SJSU in last- minute preparation for the Western Athletic Conference Champion¬ ships in two week»ai San Antonio. "We have two 'tune-ups' left before the WAC Championship." said fifth year Head Coach Daniella Irle. But their preparation and fine-tuning reajly began much earlier. "These guys work hard all year-round. We practice twice a day. 52 weeks out of the year." In their last home meet as Bull¬ dogs, senior MarLyn Julian took first place in the 400 meter indi¬ vidual medlev. and fellow seniors Patti Glosecki and Sheryl Rathje each took two. individual second place finishes against the Spartans. The 400 meter freestyle relay team of Glosecki. Rathje. senior Tricia Stanard. and freshman Heidi Crompton, finished first. Sophomore standouts Holly Gravatt and Amalia Gonzalez were victorious in two individual events each. Both Gonzalez and Gravatt were members of the winning 200 meter medley relay team, along with Glosecki and junior Deanna Voudouris. Sophomore Nicole Brushey and junior Lisa Hislop put up season best times for the Bulldogs in the 1.650 meter freestyle event. Il was the depth of the Fresno Stale team that placed them above the-Spartans. Against San Jose State, it was consistent second and third place finishes that were the deciding factors. Both, teams wound up with eight top spots in the sixteen events that took place, even though the 'Dogs were with¬ out a diver. Freshman Megan Willoughby could not compete in the one meter and three meter div¬ ing events due to an illness. Against the Ljons, Fresno State was unchallenged. The Bulldogs took the top three places in nine events. The under¬ sized LMU team was definitely out of their league winning only one event of the dav. Men's tennis team^routs Gaels Fresno Stale posted its second straight shutout victory with a 7-0 win over the Saint Mary's Gaels at the Fresno State tennis courts. The win improves the 13th-ranked Fresno Slate Bulldogs to 2-0 this season and improves its home court winning streak to 31 straight, dating back to 1993. Saint Mary's fell to 0-2. All six Bulldogs in singles won in straight sets. Fresh¬ man Robert Lindstedt made his college debut at No. 3. He beat St. Mary's Tomas Filick, 6-36-2. Lindstedt was ranked in the top-100 in Sweden prior to coming to Fresno State. "For me it's good to have our whole team together." Pe¬ ter Smith. Fresno State men's tennis coach, said. "We have another piece in place with Robert (Lindstedt) playing. "We still have a lot of work to do. It's going to be tough playing No. 1 Stanford so early in the year. It's just good for us to get on the court and compete and get that feeling." Frederik Giers. who is ranked 13th in the nation, improved to 11-3 this season1 (2-0 in duals) with a win at No. 1. He topped John McCall. 6-0 6-2. • Fresno State also swept doubles play. Kelly Gullet and P.J. Dormire. ranked 18th in the nation and No. 1 in Region VII. improved to 7-0 as a duo (including fall results). They beat McCall and Casey Kohlhoff. 8-4- Next up for Fresno State is a meeting at top-ranked and defending national champion Stanford today. Sports Information RLE PHOTO Frederik Giers improved his record to 11-3 Quick Hits By Tom Sepulveda The Daily Collegian • The Bulldogs men's bas¬ ketball team played better in that ill-conceived 10-game road trip than they did dur¬ ing losses to Colorado State and Wyoming a few weeks ago. • If you missed the An¬ thony Carter — Chris Herren shootout Saturday, you rrlissed the best game of the season. • Jesse Jackson thinks its the NBA who took Dennis Rodman's dignity away? • Separated at death: Dick Vermicl and Mike Ditka. •The great experiment is . over: Chris Herren is a great off-guard, but a lousy point guard. • I'd rather see the 49ers lose 10 games this year than have another year under Scifert and winning until the playoffs. •San Diego is working on the greatest collapse of all- time: Chargers in the Super Bowl in 1994 to possibly los¬ ing the Padres and Chargers and an empty, partially com¬ pleted stadium. •Where is the beef? I said before the season started the Bulldogs had no interior pres¬ ence. •Why does it seem like po¬ etic justice that Jerry Jones owe $8 million in back taxes? " »If the Bulldogs can't run the table, forget an invitation to the NCAA tournament. •Irony: the women's bas¬ ketball team may make the NCAA tournament, and the men might not. ' 'Watching replays of OM.'s slow-speed chase on Dateline was like watching Terry Kirby trying to get around the corner. ■ • Brian Sabean says the Giants will be the most im¬ proved team in the National League. Right. The only ca¬ veat being that the team planes of the Dodgers and Pa¬ dres collide over La Jolla. • Can the USS Parcells really be worth the number one pick? •.'
