Stern's movie
soundtrack
partly a huge
success

Howard Stem may be the self-
proclaimed "King of All Media."
but when it comes to soundtracks,
he is closer to a duke.
While the movie of the same
name is weeks away from theatri¬
cal release, the soundtrack from
Stern's autobiographical "Private
Parts" went on sale to the public last
nighi at midnight, with today be¬
ing the official debut.
The demand is sure to be great.
The quality of the recording,
though, falls slightly short of
Stem's, kingly status.
The soundtrack is a combination
of new rock tracks classic rock
tracks, and sound-bytes that are pre¬
sumably taken from the movie.
Despite the somewhat familiar for¬
mat, there is plenty of vintage Stem
variety.
Example number one -
Howard's own lyrical involvement
on (he project. He is listed on two
of the tracks, but is most noticeable
in Tortured Man." Stern narrates
about his experience with famous
women while the Dust Brothers
provide a rn\isical background.
Sounds great in theory, sounds like
wasted time on the album though.
Example number two - the use
of the quick clips. My first expo¬
sure to this phenomena was with the
Friends Soundtrack, although I am
sure it dates back further. Hopefully
the quality of the sound-bytes cho¬
sen for ;the "Private Parts"
Soundtrack js in no way represen¬
tative of the movie as a whole. In
other words - they aren't very
funny.
Example number three - the
"Ben Stem Megamix." For those
uninitiated, Ben Stem would be the
father of Howard. And the "Ben
Stem Megamix" would be an an¬
noying little cut where the elder
Stem takes a stab at manning the
DJ booth. Call me crazy, but listen¬
ing to an old man singing the "Al¬
phabet Song" is not my idea of
musical fulfillment.
With that said, and moving past
the "cutesy" elements of the "Pri¬
vate Parts" Soundtrack to the actual
music, the content is actually quite
good. There is plenty of good mu¬
sic on the album to justify its exist¬
ence.
Stern himself was often engaged
in hyping'one song in particular. "I

assignment, one that's not nearly as

doing on Fnday but don't slan anything
