Boycott against Selena film silly
By David John Chavez
Assistant Editor
Ever since that fateful
nightofMarch31,1995,our
world has changed.
The death of Tejano
superstar Selena took the
world by storm. And with
her death, we have been
exposed to what comes with
the loss of a star's life.
Exposure.
Selena Quintanilla Perez
was well on her way to
being a superstar. She was
gorgeous, she was

driven, she was loved.
It was not uncommon for
Selena's fans to walk right
up on the stage and steal a

stopping these requests
were a big deal, because in
her mind, she wasn't a big
deal. One of the small things
that made her beloved.
Now, we have a
wonderful thing happening
in Hollywood. The story of
Selena will hit the big time,
starring one of the most
talented Latina actresses.
Jennifer Lopez, the

that Lopez is a dead ringer

Lopez is not Mexican. And

angry Mexicans who spoke
of boycotting the movie.
The film is scheduled to

And for starters, I hope
there is a boycott, because.

Hey Chicano Community, WAKE UP!!!
There's some garbage
going on that we need to
deal with Raza. We need to
get of four passive butts and
shake up this university.
As a result of the movidas
pulled by the ASI anything
culture is on it's way out.
For example, they thought
that if they did not fund the
Chicano Youth Conference
that we would give up.
That's what they want - to
push us out. •
As co-chair of the
conference, I'll be damned
if I let that happen; even if I
have to charge the whole
thing on my credit card the
conference will happen. We
can't just sit back and accept
it.
You don't understand the
power that we have as a
people on this campus.
Last year, at a
Confederacion meeting, it
was brought up that we
should put together a
Chicano ticket but all we
did was discuss whether or
not we should be discussing
politics.
Now Tommy (Monreal)
is up there all by himself
with no back up or support
whatsoever. Are we to
believe that all the
candidates ASI president
Tommy Monreal has put
before the Reality",
dominated senate were
unqualified?
The senate choses not to
respect the ASI president
and the LVP Eileen
Richardson, by constantly
questioning their character.
What place does
personality conflicts have
when serving the interest
of the students?
It must be draining to put
up with all the personal
attacks and still he persists.
Where is the outrage? He
has single-handedly fought
for our concerns.
We have to opportunity
to be a strong voice here on
campus. We as Chicanos
make up a big portion of
the population and together
with the African Americans
and Asians, we can close
this university down if we
wished. But no! We don't
want to talk about politics.
"Our organization isn't
political"
At Confederacion, our so
called "umbrella"
organization, you can't
even discuss politics. What
kind of crap is that? We are
wasting all that time
choosing not to talk politics
and just accepting what the
ASThands us.
There is not even a
budget for this year and the
semester is almost over. Let
me tell you something, if
you are in an organization
on campus that in any way
deals with the ASI, you are
political.
There is no hiding from
it. People act like "political
is a bad word.
WAKE UP RAZA!!!
