News Briefs - • Reception honors Hispanic scholars Forty-three students have been honored at a university reception as recipients of 1996-97 grant from the institution's Hispanic Excellence Scholarship Fund, supported in part by the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the CSU system. - The university hosted the event at the Fresno Metropolitan Museum, where each student was received a $1,000 grant for the academic year. Included were awards from the Cesar E. Chavez Scholarship Program which has been in place for five years. • Dance groups unite for "El Mejor del-Valle" The William Saroyan Theatre will be host to "El Mejor del Valle" a dance program to feature Valley folkloric dance companies on Sunday, November 10 at 3 pm. Fresno States Los Danzantes de Aztlan; El Sol Dance Co and Teocalli will be featured in the program, sponsored by Artes Americas. Tickets will be $10 each. For more information, please call 498-4000 or members of the dance companies. • Journalism scholarships available The National Association of Hispanic Journalist (NAHJ) 1997 scholarship applications are now available for students pursuing a career in journalism. Scholarship recipients will be selected based on academic excellence, a demonstrated interest in journalism as a career and financial need. The NAHJ was established in 1986 to assist young aspiring journalist. The application deadline is February 28,1997. For more information see the Journalism department. • MALDEF Leadership Development Program Applications are now available for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) Leadership Development Program. The program was formed to refine the leadership skills of the Latino community, place Latinos on boards and commissions, and provide a leadership network for Latinos so they might be better prepared to answer the call of leadership in their community. Candidates must submit a resume and letter of interest. There will be a $35.00 nonrefundable fee payable upon acceptance to the program. For more information, please contact MALDEF at 276- 2183. • Chiapas comes to Fresno The San Francisco Mime Troupe will perform "13 Dias / 13 Days - The Zapatista Uprising in Chiapas" Sunday, November 10. The performance beginning at 8 pm will be held at the Tower Theatre. "13 Dias" is a multimediaplay with humor, drama, video scenography and songs inspired by Mexican popular music. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12.50 for students and seniors.
