Diamond 'Dogs sweep Rainbows ■ Fresno State ex¬ tends its winning streak to 11 games after Hawaii trip By David Johnson Sports Writer This past weekend a hurricane blew through the University of Hawaii's Rainbow Stadium de¬ stroying everything in its wake— ERAs, conference standings and batting averages included. What's worse, it's headed for the San Di¬ ego area on Tuesday and Wednes¬ day. The hurricane was embodied in the arms and bats of the Fresno State baseball team (18-14,6-3) as they swept a three-game series against the University of Hawaii Rainbows (18-13,5-7). With the wins, the Bulldogs ex¬ tend their win streak to 11 games, and overtake the Rainbows in the Western Athletic Conference West¬ ern Division standings. They are now tied for second, and Tuesday and Wednesday the Bulldogs take on the second-place San Diego State Aztecs (19-11-2, 6-3) in a two-game series. Against the Rainbows, the Bull¬ dog offense exploded for < 4 hits and 35 runs. The margins of vic- Powell tory were im¬ pressive as well, winning Friday 7-4, Saturday 11-5 and Sunday, with their larg¬ est margin of victory all year, 18-3. Leading the way was senior shortstop Ben Reynoso. Reynoso batted eight-for- 15 for the series, with two RBI and seven runs scored. The Bulldogs rode their win streak into the islands beginning Friday night. The game featured the two best pitchers on both staffs. Fresno State ace Jeff Weaver (6- 3, 1.98 ERA) gave up four runs in the second inning, but the Bulldogs were able to chip their way back into the game. Preseason All-American Mark Johnson (5-2,4.28 ERA) had a dif¬ ficult time containing the Bulldog offense past the second inning. Johnson threw a total of eight in¬ nings. He gave up 11 hits and seven runs and struck out four. Friday night's game was the sec¬ ond in a row that the Bulldogs had fought their way back from an early inning deficit, something that the they had difficulty doing earlier in the season. Saturday's game proved to be different, as the Bulldogs jumped to a four-run first inning lead. Se¬ nior left-hander Scott Navarro (4- 0,5.90) was able to hold down the Rainbows for the six and a third innings he threw. He gave up nine hits and five runs, two of which came in the sixth. Randy Goodrich came in to>- earn his first save of the season. The top of the Bulldogs order, Reynoso, center fielder Josh Kaitfors and catcher Matt Curtis, performed well offensively. They batted a combined 7-for-13, and scored seven of the Bulldogs' 11 runs. Curtis also drove in three RBI. Sunday the Bulldogs walloped the Rainbows 18-3, who were be¬ ginning a 16-game home stand what is often considered the tough¬ est park to play in Rainbow Sta¬ dium. The offense overshadowed a tre¬ mendous effort from Mike Powell (3-4, 5.40), who threw his second complete game of the season. He had three strike outs, while giving up four hits, three runs and only one walk. Powell, and the rest of the Bull¬ dog staff, hope to ride the wave of" their win-streak into San Diego's Charlie Smith field for tonight's 7 p.m. game. After posting an impressive 12- 4 win over the tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge Matadors on March 15, the Aztecs slid for three games. They posted a win on Friday against Southern Utah at home, however, to end their losing streak. Seven Aztec players post batting averages above the .300 mark. Most.notably is first baseman Lee Travis, who is batting .367, with 38 RBI and seven home runs. Tonight's game will decide who takes sole possession of second place in the WAC West. The pitching match up will see Brian Scott (4-4, 2.51, 9 saves), who has seen a majority of the Az¬ tec innings at 57.1, against Bulldog freshman Mark Parantala (2-1, 7.25, 2 saves). We know it's been hard to miss the r^changes...^ So why not come and be part of them? As the Fresno State Athletic Department continues to reach new heights. The Daily Collegian Sports Department expects to progress as well. But it all starts with quality writers and that's what Sports Editor Brian Fisher is looking for.'
