Patterson, Fresno's incumbent mayor, easily won re-election— trouncing his seven opponents and avoiding a November run-off. "With the win tonight, I'll be able to take the next seven months and prepare for the transition from the present form of government to the strong mayor form of govern¬ ment," Patterson said. Michael Erin Woody, Patterson's main opponent, all but conceded the race to Patterson about 12:30 a.m. "My campaign was outspent ten to one. I've always been my own man," Woody said. "And the Fresno political establishment has never supported me because of it." Woody also said that Tuesday's election results showed that "a ma- • jority of people basically support the idea of unchecked development and growth" in Fresno. By Matthew Hart Senior Staff Writer Paul Rodriguez's emphasis on ethnic pride and responsibility earned him two standing ovations last night, one when he was intro¬ duced and one when his lecture was over. Rodriguez was the third in the semester's list of speakers for the University Lecture series. He is an entertainer with numerous show business projects to his credit, in the arenas of everything from acting to producing. Rodriguez filled the stands and floor of the North Gym yesterday. The huge attendance success of the lecture follows up on astronaut Jim Lovell's appearance earlier this se¬ mester, when he spoke to the Satel¬ lite Student Union and an overflow crowd in the upstairs cafeteria. Much of Rodriguez's comedy act and lecture came from his back¬ ground as a-member of the Hispanic community. While the crowd was mixed ethnically, there was a no¬ ticeably high percentage of Chicano and Latin American students. "There's no other country in the world with our ethnic diversity," said Rodriguez in his lecture. "There is no reason for conflict." Much of Rodriguez's talk was politically based, urging audience members to get out and vote.
