By Luis Hernandez The Daily Collegian Meet Bobby Brooks, the 6-2, 210 pound Fresno State junior line¬ backer. In his first start in the game against Hawaii, he took full advan¬ tage of the opportunity presented to him through an injury to starting linebacker Chris Bayne. He racked up 10 tackles and proved to be a strong presence on the defensive side of-the ball for Fresno State. His 10 tackles were second on the team only to A.J. Gass' 15. Gass leads the Western Athletic conference with 56 this year. For the season. Brooks has tal¬ lied up 23 tackles and has caused one fumble while taking part in the four games this season so far. "Playing linebacker is the best thing in the planet," he said. "My main job is to stop the run," Brooks said. "We play the run first and then the pass." Despite a strong showing in the Hawaii game, he is still looking to do better on the football field. 'There is always room for improve¬ ment. I am planing on improving," Brooks said. "If I am playing and the team wins, so be it. If I am not playing and the team wins, so be it," Brooks said. "Whatever makes the team win." In the game against Hawaii, the Fresno State defense scored its first shutout since 1989, when the Bull¬ dogs blanked Long Beach State. And Brooks is quick to spread the credit around. "We had good push from the front guys, so [the linebackers] did not have to deal with offensive linemen," Brooks said. Brooks is real high on coach Jim Sweeney, and appreciates his teach¬ ing style. Brooks called Sweeney one of the best coaches he has ever played for. He added he likes Sweeney because he encourages players but also asks them to im-„ prove more. "He always wants you to do better," Brooks said. As for his contributions to the defensive unit for Fresno State. Brooks said that he brings speed to the defense. The Bulldogs will square off with the San Jose State Spartans this Saturday, and Brooks does not want to put the pressure on the defensive unit by predicting another shutout. Steve Young has dressed but not played the last two weeks, watching from the side¬ lines as back-up quarterback Elvis Grbac guided the team to wins over NFC West doormats Atlanta and St. Louis. And while head coach George Seifert continues to say that Young is the number one guy, the numbers don't lie'. Young has only one touch- ' down pass this season. Grbac has four. Young is 2-1 as a starter. Grbac is 2-0. The offense struggled with Young, especially against Carolina in week three. The offense has been much more effective since Grbac has come on.
