Telephone: (209) 278-5733 Sports THE DAILY COLLEGIAN Thursday. October 3,1996 Cross-country team does its part for environment By Erik Pfeifle The Daily Collegian In spring of 1980 The Daily Collegian printed an ad asking for a group to apply to take over the poorly maintained recycling center. It had been originally main¬ tained by a student-organized ecol¬ ogy club. After only six months the club's desire to maintain the upkeep of the facility soon dissipated. When the ad was seen in the pa¬ per, an ecology-minded cross-coun¬ try coach Red Rstes saw this as an opportunity to give back to nature and to help serve as a fundraiser for his athletes. Estes, who is the head coach for men and women's cross-country, was granted the right to take over the operation and he took the bull by the horns and ran with it. After cleaning up the mess left by the previous organization by tak¬ ing twenty-two loads of garbage in his full sized pick-up truck to the dumps, Estes was able to start fresh. He began by recycling alumi¬ num, newspaper, cardboard, and paper. In the first year, the total gross recycled amount was 200,000 pounds. , Today the recycling center ran by Estes recycles 14 different items and that 200.000 pound total has increased every year, up to last year's amount of over one million pounds. "We actually operate a two-fold operation here. Number one. we operate a 24-hour drop-off service. And two, we keep the place clean so it is hot an eye sore," said Estes. The area the center served is not limited to Fresno. "Some people bring things in that you would not believe how far away from [Fresno]. From Mari¬ posa, to clear up in the mountains, and Huntington—people come a hundred miles," said Estes. "I've been in there talking to people that actually have no recycling area near them. They come to Fresno occa¬ sionally, so they just bring their recyclables with them. So we ser¬ vice quite a large area in that re¬ gard." The center, which is not funded by the school, received a facelift in 1986. An $ 11,000 grant, which took three years to get, plus money from prior profits, allowed Estes to lay a 30* x 60' reinforced concrete pad to eliminate the pot-holes and mud. The center's profits go towards buying new uniforms and equip¬ ment for the Fresno State track team. It also allows Estes to send some athletes to The National Jun¬ ior Championships and The Na¬ tional Senior Championships— which the athletic department does not budget. The athletes spend some time helping out. but Estes has hired three students that serve as full-time employees for the operation. Estes himself spends time there before and after school, and on Sat¬ urdays and Sundays. He also takes care of paperwork responsibilities. For added convenience, the re¬ cycling center offers an on -campus pick-up program. For anyone inter¬ ested in 'U-Call-We-Haur the ex¬ tension is 4097. The vehicle is the oldest mem¬ ber of the athletic department's van fleet and is rented by the center for $0.50 a mile. "The athletic department has been very supportive of us," Estes said. The center is located at the south-east corner ofBarstow and Maple avenues. Items recycled by the center are: aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, steel or tin cans, scrap metal, telephone books, magazines, catalogs, all paper types (white, colored, computer, and newspaper), pallets and refillable laser toner car¬ tridges.
