Fresno State is still off to the program's third-best start in the 31-year history of Bull¬ dog volleyball. Fresno State's best start occurred in 1995 and 1976 when both teams raced out to a 10-1 start. The Bulldogs 10-3 start is the third-best beginning under head coach Lindy Vivas since her arrival in 1991. In five short seasons. Vivas has directed the Bulldogs into the national spotlight with national rankings and postseason appear¬ ance^ in four of those years, while averaging 22 wins the last two sea¬ sons. — Sports Information Special Olympic celebration set for Saturday Two special events have been planned by the university to honor Fresno State's Olympic heroes. First, there will be a celebration to recognize the Fresno State USA Olympic softball gold medalists at the Bulldog Diamond on Saturday, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. . Then, at halftime of the Fresno State-Hawaii football game, all 14 Bulldog Olympians who partici¬ pated in the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta will be honored. — Sports Information Bulldogs rebound against Dons ■ Women's volleyball comes back strong after loss to top-ranked Hawai'i. Kael Mojfat The Daily Collegian The Fresno State women's vol¬ leyball team got its 11th victory of the season last night against the , Lady Dons of the University of San Francisco— 15-3.9-15, 15-5. 15- 7. "San Francisco played pretty well." Fresno State Coach Lindy Vivas said."They played better de¬ fense than we expected." The Lady Dons did not play .enough defense, however, as Fresno State chalked up a very respectable .263 team hitting percentage. The Bulldogs, in turn, played very good defense, holding' the Lady Dons to a team hitting per¬ centage of only .079. Diana Nalbandian led the Bulldog defense with 20 digs. Senior Tricia Tuley added 11 digs and two solo blocks while Amy Cheli and Debbie Davis collected nine digs apiece. Offensively, Tuley had a big night with 25 kills and two service aces. Also hitting well for Fresno State were Davis with 14 kills, and Amy Cheli who added seven kills. One of the big stories of the By Matt The Worm' Lieve The Daily Collegian Last Friday we did not run a paper, so the running total for my football picks remains at an even 5-5. Now for thirweek's games. #4 OHIO STATE at #5 NOTRE DAME For the second straight week America is treated with two foot¬ ball programs that are rich in tra¬ dition and accustomed to win¬ ning. Last week featured Florida and Tennessee, this week it is the Irish and the Buckeyes. The Irish are coming off a nail-biter that saw them defeat Texas in the last seconds of the game for a 27-24 victory. For Ohio State, the num¬ ber 70 has become a permanent fixture on the scoreboard. In their opening game Ohio State destroyed Rice 70-6 and then last week embarrassed Pitts¬ burgh 72-0. This week will be the Buckeyes first true test. Notre Dame showed that their football team is capable of plac¬ ing up to the competition. With a victory over Texas last week, Notre Dame will be ready to come home and impress the loyal Southbend crowcLAnother key factor will be Irish quarter¬ back Ron Powlus. If he can play a near flawless game, then the Joe Montana clone should be re¬ ceiving some Heisman trophy votes. Analysis: Ohio State is a solid football program, but look who night was the aggressive play of Adaline Bouldin who collected 11 kills with a .261 hitting percentage.- Although Bouldin .was only cred¬ ited with one official solo block, she appeared to be a much more domi¬ nant factor at the net. reaching in and taking away the angle on many of the Lady Don attacks. ""It's been fun to watch Adaline get better." Vivas said. "She works very hard and has improved a lot." The other big story of the night w as the leadership of freshman set¬ ter Diann Aufdermauer. She did a great job of running the offense. She got us stable." Vivas said. Aufdermauer finished the evening with 37 assists and three kills, in¬ cluding a very timely dump in game three to get the Bulldogs on the board. In the fourth game, Aufdermauer also got a big solo block. "I heard them talking all night about hitting it over me. Sort of felt good to get that block," Aufdermauer said. * The Bulldogs take on a very scrappy University of New Mexico team tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the North Gym. Paul Martinez — The Daily Collegian Diann Aufdermauer controls a ball against USF. Weekend Preview they have played. Ron Powlus wWI play well and the Irish will still be in the national championship hunt while the Buckeyes will suffer their first loss of the year. » UCLA at #8 MICHIGAN Welcome to college football Bruin Mead Coach Bob Toledo. It was bad enough you had to take your Bruins and open with a loss at Tennessee, but now you have to play your second road game at Michigan!! Don't worry Westwood, the Bru¬ ins will come ready to play foot¬ ball. Michigan is the number eight team in the country and did beat a very good Colorado football team on the road two weeks ago. On the flip side they only beat Illinois 20- 6 and struggled with Boston Col¬ lege last week in a 20-14 win. So what is my point? Michigan is an overrated foot¬ ball team and does not deserve the number eight next to its name. If UCLA running back Skip Hicks can run the ball effectively and sophomore quarterback Cade McNown does not play like a sophomore the Bruins will make it a close football game. Analysis: Ann Arbor Michigan is arguably the toughest place to play a football game. Every Satur¬ day 105,000 crazy Wolverine, fans root for their beloved Michigan football team. After Saturday you will not hear one of those 105,000 fans say one word as the Bruins win in an upset. #11 NORTH CAROLINA at #2 FLORIDA STATE If North Carolina can upset Florida State, it will be the greatest moment for the university since a. guy by the name of Michael Jor- \ dan sank his 19 foot jump-shot to give the Tar-Heels the National Championship over Georgetown in basketball. North Carolina enters the game at 3-0 and if they can wi n they will havo a legitimate shof at the Atlantic Coast Conference title. One problem for Carolina is that they have to travel to Florida State, where the Seminoles rarely lose a game. The key for Florida State will be how well running back Warrick Dunn can run the ball. This should be Dunn's coming out game, as it seems that the entire country is waiting for him to rush for 150 yards and three touchdowns. North Carolina also has a talented running back in Leon Johnson who rushed for 1,000 yards last season. Analysis: First place in the ACC is on the line in this game. Florida State will win but not easily, and Warrick Dunn will take some Heisman votes away from Powlus. HOUSTON at PITTSBURGH Who would have thought that the Oilers would be playing for first place. The winner of this game will take over sole possession of first place in the AFC-central division. Houston is playing well thanks to a good defense and a healthy quar¬ terback in the form of Chris Chan¬ dler. Pittsburgh is playing better than a lot of people expected even after the loss of All-Pro line¬ backer Greg Lloyd. The Steelers are making the gamble on Jerome Bettis look like the move of the year as he is close to lead¬ ing the NFL in rushing. \ Analysis: Houston is a young and upcoming team in the NFL ,but the Steelers only allow 15 points per game and with the power running of Bettis will move into first place in the Cen¬ tral division. ' KANSAS CITY at SAN DJEGO This is another game with first place on the line as the Chiefs invade Jack Murphy sta¬ dium with a perfect 4-0 record, whileyie Chargers are an,im¬ pressive 3-1. Both teams are coming off divisional wins as the Chiefs barley beat Denver^ 17- 14. while the Chargers defeated the Raiders 40-34. Kansas City will rely on linebacker Derrick Thomas and defensive lineman Neil Smith to put pressure on Charger quarterback Stan Humphries. San Diego will look for wide receiver Toni Martin who leads the AFC in,receiving to get open and produce plenty of touchdowns. Analysis: San Diego will need something to cheer about, especially after the Padres will fail to win the division in the national league west Have no fear the Chargers are here and will do something the Padres could not do, be in first place.
